And it's not just Online... you can also play the CLASSIC PAPER GAMES for Kids, Teens, or Adults, and win free new books, courtesy of the Friends of the Ann Arbor District Library and the Scott and Marcy Westerman Fund, plus Temporary Tattoo sheets, mini gardening sets, coupons for free Cookies, Burritos, Bowling or AADL Zoom Lends... AND THAT'S JUST THE BEGINNING!

On July 5th, the 2013 SUMMER GAME SHOP will open, filled with amazing new SUPER USEFUL products, including Picnic Blankets, Coolers, THE NICEST MESSENGER BAG WE'VE EVER OFFERED, and many more surprises throughout the summer! Earn points, climb the leaderboard, get stuff and have fun all summer AT YOUR LIBRARY!

The biggest new feature this year is RECRUITMENT BONUSES! On your Player Page, you can generate a Recruitment code you can give to friends and family who aren't summer game players! If a new player with a library card attached enters your code, YOU get a 500 point bonus, and THEY DO TOO! That's a big step up and it will surely be interesting to see as the summer goes on which players recruit the biggest networks! Just remember, to get the bonus, your recruit has to be a NEW PLAYER with an AADL LIBRARY CARD on their account!

We've also tweaked some other points values and will be rolling out changes during the day today. So hardcore players, stay tuned! And new players, dive in and just post a comment here for the expert players if you have any questions!

THANKS FOR PLAYING!

FYI, Summer Game staff...currently the "Leaderboard" link defaults to Summer 2012 game leaderboard. It's probably on your list, but just in case it got overlooked: update that link URL. :)

@eli, since I'm an obsessive checker, I also noticed that the "badges" hyperlink on the "Earn Points" page goes to the Summer Game 2012 badge list instead of the 2013, currently empty, badge list page.

EDIT: I take it back; it goes to a list of all the badges ever. I still wonder if that might be confusing for new players, though.

Yeah, I am so excited. I love the Summer Reading Program and have been talking it up for a week.

No, I don't go to AG. I know James cause I used to live in his neighborhood. @Morgsush: Actually, I thought you were Jessica Z., so I asked her and she told me you were Jessica C.

In reply to by Bookbird

Cause only Clague, Tappan, and the Ann Arbor high school play AG, and I'm guessing this player is in middle school, just a guess.

In reply to by gxl

What did I do??? This isn't about the time me and Danny tried to give you 20 dollars to stop annoying us at Nationals, right? (If I were you, I would have taken the money)

Yeah, I only brought 20 dollars to ihop. I think Danny stole (borrowed is what Danny would say) Kern's wallet, which had 100 dollars in it, so it was at least 120 dollars.

As a library nerd who isn't a minor, I'd like to remind those under 18 especially to never never post last names on this or any internet message board. Sure, you are safer here with eli monitoring and blacking out last names, but all ages do read the boards looking for hints, and talking about the game. I applaud you for mostly sticking to that, but you are safest when you stay more anonymous. It's pretty awesome that aadl can set it up this way to keep minors safe. Kudos to this community and the library alike!

if you go to 'my players' and 'summergame2013 scorecard', there should be a link that says something like 'show all sg2013 badges.' there are about 6-7 badges there!

In reply to by VmT

Sorry, I should have been more clear. If you don't see your "SummerGame2013" Scorecard, it might appear once you've earned 2013 points. That's what did it for me. Then you can scroll down to select "See All SummerGame2013 Badges". Good luck to all, and most importantly...have fun!

Thanks, in advance, to the AADL staff and organization for providing a GREAT summer game, that many AA families look forward to!!!

FYI All of the Catalog Puzzle Game Codes for 2011 and 2012 Badges should now be active again, so you can earn those 2011 and 2012 badges you missed (albeit at 10% of the original point values).

You can add your paper Game Card ID by clicking the "Edit Player Info" link on the top of your Player page. I'll see if I can add a link to make that a little more obvious.

In attempting to earn the 2012 badges, I've encountered a few challenges. Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

It appears that the codes for the "Weirdness Beyond" badge from 2012 have expired. Will they be reset? I was unable to complete this badge last year.

Also, I'm having difficulty with the first clue "Sonic's World" badge. I suspect that the book to be found has been upgraded to a new edition later in 2012. But I could be wrong.

Finally, I'm also having difficulty with the "Boneheaded" badge. I've typed in the first names requested, but none of search results reveal a code. Has the original book disappeared?

@gxl: The last secretshop was really easy to find, but I still didn't get anything good...
@slugwhisperer: I think the weirdness beyond was expired, maybe the sonic and the bonehead, but for the sonic one, F*** "Sonic" *****. For the bonehead one, look for a documentary about J*** S****.

The Weirdness Beyond badge was about finding weirdness outside the catalog. If memory serves, the codes were on various blog posts on the AADL site (and were designed to make you use the "search this site" feature). Maybe blog posts get hidden, archived, or otherwise removed? I certainly wasn't able to find where codes were when I looked again yesterday.

Badges images should now be fixed! And yes, there will be an evening badge drop tonight at 6pm, too!

The checkout history function is very picky about not recording anything you don't want recorded. That means you have to turn it on first, then all checkouts from after that time will be recorded. It won't pick up currently checked out items, only the new ones.

-ejk

I was trying to do the "Badge-r" badge and i'm pretty sure the answer to the first clue was wisconsin. I tried typing that into the game code area, and it didn't work?

Okay, I remembered from last year that Jessica was Morgsush, and Smiles was Anly. (Sorry!)

Who is Anly? *Suddenly remember AG nationals* Anly was the person that beat me at nationals! (Because I was tired. I personally blame Danny.)

The people in our room were watching youtube videos and so we slept at like 11:45, and AG makes everyone tired.
Why I blamed Danny: Everyone in our AG team blames Danny for everything.

Can someone help me with the last code of the Rick Riordan badge? I've searched for the planet, and found a code in an item, but it turned out that it was an old code. Then I saw an item that actually had the correct adjective they were looking for, but it didn't have a code.

Edit: Nevermind, turns out I just had to look in a list about the planet.

I need help finding a code. on the A Beep Heard 'Round the World badge, I'm typing in sputnik mania in the catalog, and a dvd shows up but I can't find the game code!!!

In reply to by vadnala

Vadnala:

For the 22 books one, just google some of the key words in the clue. I think the series will pop up. If not, use the hint.

For the planet one, there's actually a list that contains books about this planet. Go to the list, and try seeing if it's there.

Echtemk: Try googling some of the key words, like the profession and the name of the dog. And the first name of the dectective is actually hidden in the clue; it just isn't capitalized.

In reply to by echternk

You're welcome. :)
If anyone needs help with any of the other badges, feel free to ask.

arjlib234:
Try looking for the dog's other names on its Wikipedia page. One of the nicknames should remind you of a certain food, which you could search in the catalog.

I'm having trouble with the last code for the badger badge. I tried googling animated badgers, badger anime, etc. I found a badger character which fits the description but nothing shows up in the aadl catalog when I search for it. Any tips? Thanks!

fowntse: Are you on your tablet or desktop computer?

Zekicmom: You can see the hints on your tablet by, instead of just clicking on the badge, clicking and holding until you see "Open in a new tab". That's what I always do.

Badges and catalog codes give less points this year because there will be more of them! Plus event codes are still 200-500 points, and checkouts are now worth 50 points apiece instead of 10. So if you want to make up that difference check some stuff out, come to some events, or report time spent reading, watching, or listening!

The Oh My Gods! badge is now up on the main badge page too. Good eye -- don't know how that one snuck away!

As far as the "classic paper game" goes - the Adult form is pretty self-explanatory, but is there some kind of instruction set for the Teen form?

@eli I am not able to find the second code of "Dalmatians 101" - I search up "firehouse dogs" in the catalog but can't find anything.

Yay!

Points o matic is a separate game from Summr Game that you can also earn points and badges for. There are three different modes.

The Summer Game store has not opened yet this year, but when it does you can find it by clicking on the second to last red tab (above Contact Us) on the very left.

A Summer Game code is a code that you can enter on yr player page to earn points, which you can uste to buy stuff once the Summ Game shop opens

You get game codes by following the clues on badges and finding a certain item in the catalog. Summer Game codes are always found on the left side of an item's page, under Subjects.

That's a reference to the hidden code from last year, isn't it?

I actually like the codes that are not explicitly posted on the item's page because it is a little bit more challenging and make you thinks a little more. Plus it is kind of clever.

Zhengyang1022, Morgsush, gxl, Bookbird, Vadnala, Cherylo…I have to tell you that seeing your comments back and forth remind me that I missed your bantor over the winter. You make me laugh, and I always appreciated your tips. It helped me to understand the game when I started last year. Keep up the fun!!!

@VmT, how nice of you to say! I look forward to lots of conversation and mutual help this summer, though I don't really expect to keep up with Morgsush, Smiles, Bookbird, Zhengyang1022, or gxl on comments. :)

Thank you so much for that comment VmT! :)

FYI: Rainbow FIsh was a code from last year, and one of the (I think) most creative codes, and probably the hardest to get in the beginning of the start of 2012 summer reading game.

I'm having a problem finding my next hint. I submitted a correct game code for the first hint & the rest of the hints seem to have disappeared. Is anyone else having this problem?

Thank you VmT. :) It's always fun to discuss a game we all love with my friends.
I remember last year I was really intense about Summer Game (all of my friends can remember how crazy I was about it), but this year I am going to take it easy a little bit and just focus on helping the new players.

fowntse: Which code or badge are you talking about?

Thank you VmT!
I'm still aiming for top 20 since that guy Jim took my 20th place last year. I found it so unfair! It was after summer game, so it must have been some sort of prize code. That or a glitch.

@Morgsush
First of all, thank you, I know my acting skills are superior.
Secondly, nationals? Who? Me? You must be talking about someone else. Silly morgsush, you're getting me mixed up with someone else. :D

Ugh. I can't. The story is quite tragic, actually. Once upon a time, there lived a little girl named smiles. *sniffle* On day, her friend wanted her to go to the library. But, alas! The girl was abandoned. Both her parents… missing! *dadadaduh (dramatic music)* The girl was trapped at home (aka had no ride)! *gasp* The End.

Thank you, thank you. Donations can be placed in the violin case. *dramatic bow*

Who is MORGsush!!!!!!~!!!!!!!!~~~~~~~!!!!!!!????????????????????????/////////////..../././././/./././/./././???????!!!!!!!!!!

It had 1%! What was I supposed to do. I don't even think I can change it anymore...

@morgsush: I'm using my iPad. I found out that I can see all the hints from my previous codes in the "see full scorecard" section; so I've been using that option instead.

You can do what I told Zekicmom: Instead of simple clicking on the badge, hold it until you see "open in a new tab". You can see all of the codes by opening it in a new tab

Excited to see what new badges will be dropped & what new prizes will be available to us this year!

Can't wait until July 5th! I missed the good prizes last summer (please bring back the umbrella!!!!)

I'm stuck on the first clue for the badger badge (but I'm sure I'll eventually get it).

One thing that wasn't obvious to me was how to create a "team" in the summer reading game - what's the scoop on that?

Bringing even more players into our addiction... *evil laughter*

edwardvielmetti: Try searching for a guide on the state for the first code of the badger badge.
To make a team, just go to play.aadl.org/summergame/teams and then click on the "Create a New Team" button on the upper right corner.

@smiles: Yah, that doesn't really help, I know a lot of people that are asian and like reading. Do you wear contacts? cuz most of the asians I know either wear glasses or contacts. Give me better hints!!

In reply to by Zhengyang1022

No offense Andy but what you type on here does NOT match what I would think you say. Like it doesn't match your personality… uhhhh. That sounds really weird… but. It's just that you don't match my version of you…

Well, you see, based on the way you look and… look, you just seem like a really popular person. And a tad I dunno, arrogant? I'm not sure that's the right word but you just seem like the kind of person that uses slang and doesn't read. And I wouldn't have thought you play summer game or even heard of it… did you play last year?

Actually, I like reading a lot. And usually, I use slang on email whenever I'm talking with my friends. But most of the time I use correct grammar. And yeah, I played the first year it started. That's why I'm no.1 in all games! :)

@Smiles: *facepalm. And do you mean kaichou wa maid sama? No, I don't think so. Sometimes I'm looking through Mangahere.com looking for something good and it doesn't say completed.

Wow, do you think I would actually read that? I just see it sometimes when I'm looking through mangahere. But some of the manga I read are romance. Sword Art Online is romance.
@Smiles: I'm going to Huron. What about you?

I think Sword Art Online is a mix I really like the mix between action and romance. I like action, romance, mystery, and sport manga. I like bloody manga, but not to scary, like Bloody Monday and Tantei Gakuen Q. :)

In reply to by gxl

Wow, 48 comments. Dang you guys talk a lot...
What's your favorite site for reading manga? I actually really like mangahere, because the layout is nice and it is very simple and easy to use on mobile devices. Plus it has a lot of mangas that mangafox doesn't have. I used to like Mangareader, but it has a bad design (but a lot of mangas that Mangafox doesn't have, again). However mangafox is nice in that it shows the volumes.

Yeah, mangahere and Mangareader seem to have a lot of the liscensed manga (is that illegal?).

And with such a long story like Vampire Knight, you can kind of expect the ending to be rushed. I mean, I bet the author gets tired of it and just wants to stop and start a new piece.

Andy:
But I guess you would get bored sometime, and it would just come down to you forcing yourself to finish it, just for the fans. I mean, that happens to me a lot with my art. I start a piece, but then halfway through I just get tired of the whole thing and want to start a new thing. Even though I spent so much time on it, I still feel like I improved and got some experience.

In reply to by Morgsush

Well, it just seems like it. I don't really have a reason, it is more of a feeling. I guess because you were so into the manga discussion, even talking about couples and what not. Most boys I know wouldn't be like that...
Does anyone else feel the same way? James?

Actually, the manga ended last month. :( I didn't really like the ending. It was kinda rushed. I want to tell you what happened at the end but I don't want to spoil it for you. And I agree with you on Zero and Yuki.

I think I just realized why James thought you were a girl. Online, you seem to write like a girl.
And Vampire Knight ended? Finally? Oh great, now I have to start from the beginning all over again. I've tried reading it before, but I usually stopped at the part where Yuki gets turned into a pure blood because I just found that part to be really weird (and incest, ew) and not a good twist to the story. Then I started again, but it was ongoing so I never finished and kind of forgot about it for a while.

Well, not exactly like a girl, more like something in between. And Vampre Knight ended?!?!? OMG I am totally reading it!!!!! I loved it but a rushed ending is kinda… bad. :(

Didn't we get to like page seven commenting last year? Sooooo, probably not. And JZ!!! You finally started commenting! All we need now is parzival.

Woah, I went to check and JZ IS third. I think it was because of the codes she got at the Downtown library.
But then I'm suddenly second...
How did this happen?! I though I was fifth!

Oh, and anyone invested in joining me at the Downtown library tomorrow? I'll be there on Friday from opening time (nine am) to three or four. Please come, I'm lonely! But if you come from 11:301 to 1:00, chances are that I'm out eating so...

And that reminded me about the sheets Eric passes out on the bus to Nationals, and one of the new Ling rules said that every sentence had to be written in a British accent or something like that.
Ah... Good times...

wha? oh, my dad showed me a funny youtube video titled my dad is asian. it's so funny! and quite true. you get an A, that's ok. Anything lower, DEATH!
6 pages!

@morgsush: That brings back a lot of memories. I don't know if you know Richard G. but he is always saying stuff like herro yerro, and he wrote on my social studies book herro this is yerro boy, and in my yearbook Jen was like herro blah blah blah... Who started this?!?!?!?

Yeah!!! We can all team up at KRC but we need peep's emails. I only have morgsush and gxl… maybe get them at KRC? And yes, I am Anly. James already said it before but I don't think you ever realized… :)

In reply to by Zhengyang1022

Sure, you can team up with us. After the event, we'll exchange codes by email. I know someone who has your email (JZ). Wow, that sounds stalkerish.

@gxl, I know you'd mentioned having problems with posting comments on a few SG threads.

It looks like some of the duplicate posts that you made (perhaps accidentally?) set off something in our comment spam filter.

Since I can see you are a real, legit, human being, I'm going through some of those comments that are "awaiting moderation," but it looks like that is why your comments got put into moderation rather than published right away.

Just a note to be extra careful about duplicate posts, players! We love you and your enthusiasm, but sometimes spam filters aren't the best about identifying who is posting legitimate stuff!

Hi @gxl, I'm still working on fixing the problem. If you can wait a little bit to post, that might help. I need to get through the backlog of comments first! : )
Thanks for your patience!

Wow, there have got to be people other than me who did not understand that conversation.

SIX PAGES!!!
Why do you guys always beat me? Hmph
Well, I understand since I was probably the one who started the whole idea, but now I'm afraid of what conversation I've created.

Just a heads-up....

@gxl I've gone through the backlog of comments, but I'm not positive if that will solve your problem with the spam filter going forward. Fingers crossed!

I'll keep my eyes on the new badge drop thread tomorrow, and hopefully you will be unidentified as spam shortly! I'll check in with other AADL staff tomorrow if it's still posing a problem. Thanks!

Nope, sadly...
I'll go ask, kay?

Yeah, let try, at least.
I have to volunteer from 9-12 though, and I don't know if I will actually get time to get codes. So Smiles, you gotta cover for me! Please? :)

Yes, there is a badge drop today! Sadly, today is also the first day I have scheduled activities this week. :( Is that the sad emoticon?

Too bad... Cool! I just discovered if I swing a metal ruler tied to a string around it makes a noise like an engine. Now Taffy is utterly spooked.

Lol. Poor taffy. That sounds funny though. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll try that with my cat… And I just found out my mom wants me to pick peas from 9-12 so I can't be there either… unless she drops me off. But I wanna Jimmy John for lunch so… bookbird, can you organize the team and find codes for us? Plz?

I just mostly need codes for Saturday. I'll be there the whole time on Sunday.
If I end up not getting the codes from 9-12, can someone help?
And I won't be there after 12 either, so can you cover that, Smiles?

Yep yesterday night I was chatting with her over email and she was like 4th. Today I checked and she was first. Maybe she did it in the morning...

Well that's because I already did all that rating last year and because most of my points comes from commenting...
17,000 points from commenting (and I didn't get into a commenting rage like last year's yet).
