Streets Quest Continues with Quest #2!

by andrewjmac

Greetings, Questers! The first Streets Quest was a success with 84 people beginning but only 36 making it to the end. Some people couldn't handle the oblique clues, the lack of meaningful hints, or the actually coming downtown; only the tough ones remain. Now that you've got the hang of it, things are a little tougher this time around with no codes handily pulled out to assist you. And good luck using Google Street View when Glass Gazing this time: it might still work, but I kind of doubt it (sinister laugh of your choice here). Better get down to it! Once again, find the panel from the Downtown Ann Arbor Historical Street Exhibit that the riddle describes for your first code and badge. With that badge, your Quest is unlocked! The three parts of your quest will require you to look closely at the photographs in the online exhibit, stand where the panel does on the street and look around, and navigate through Old News to find articles and photos related to the panel. By doing all of this, you will complete your Quest! Your first clue for Streets Quest #2:

Long ago, Main became the commercial stop for both townie and country hick,
And women worried less about mud on their skirts--after Main Street was _____ ____ _____.

I found the panel that says "women worried less about muddy skirts once main street was _ _ _", but the words in that sentence do not work as a game code.

Whoops! Now the game code matches the words on the panel. Thanks for the heads up, SarahRose!

Once again, Questers, if your knowledge of downtown Ann Arbor is decent, it is possible to get Glass Gazing without doing any street views or any of that tricky stuff, or going downtown if you can't get there. Knowledge of the city will get you the badge. But if you can go downtown, I'm sure you'll get the clues very easily. The panels are great to see in person, too.

Thanks again, AADL for drawing attention to your great collection and to the history and current state of Ann Arbor.

I really need help with Old Newsmakers #4. I am pretty sure I found the right article, but I've tried every variation of the three words I found to no luck. Am I supposed to enter the name of the person who makes the treats? I can't find a name for them...

@Morgsush: you enter the name of the treat. Find the one for that price.
@Bookbird and @cherylo: Search using the first few words from the clue, one of the newspaper clips has his nickname. Read the entire clip. You can't miss it.

Thanks, @rimpopu, that got me going. Now I'm stuck on the last one. I thought I had found it--the phrase even
rhymes--but no dice even after trying many permutations.

Post and solve. In this case google showed me what I was missing.

I plan to visit downtown tomorrow afternoon, so I may be able to help clue you after that, but it will depend on what I find.

@Morgsush: Hmm..makes me wonder if you are at the right place because the one I got my information from has only one choice. Try searching for just the guy's name and the capitalized word in the clue. Once you find what you are looking for. Go through the list. It is there.

If you go downtown, you should find all 3 Glass Gazing pretty easily. And no, GP is not right. Not even on the right block! Can't think of any good clues, except that if you've been downtown in that area, picture yourself at that intersection where the glass panel is. What's around you? But go down if you can -even get out of the car! Great things to be found in the place that is the answer to GG#2! One of my favorite places downtown.

I can use help with second glass gazing. Any clues on completing it without going to downtown? I thought it was GP.

I went downtown to the location in question today (and visit Vault of Midnight, but that's another story). I have to agree, GP is not on that block and not visible from the corner location. Even a drive by will get the answers if you are able to look around. Though I admit without my smartphone in hand to enter codes with and get the next clue, I would have probably had to drive by a few times between entering codes.

To be clear, I was on the sidewalk with my smartphone, not driving and texting!

Thank you @pk and @cherylo for all the information. It helped me. GP misled me. Now I was sure it had to be one of the others in my list. I went through it one by one carefully to see if I missed anything before I made the trip and voila! there it was. I can't believe I had entered everything else but this. I had read about the first and the third so I got lucky. Another Streetquest solved without hitting the street!

So I was looking at the leader board and noticed that two players have 330 more points than the rest of us. Can you earn bonus points? How do you earn bonus points?

exhibit? on a corner yes. I didn't go downtown to solve this. so I'm not sure about an exhibit. think 2D not 3D . google map street view might work. it's near vault of midnight.

The Glass gazing badges can be solved by going downtown to visit the actual street panel. There are actual glass panels downtown on street corners. If you've never seen them in person, they are very cool. The panels you see on the AADL website are pictures of the actual glass panels downtown. You stand in front of it, can read about everything that used to be there, and be looking through the panel at what is there now. It is a great way to "view" history and imagine the Ann Arbor of long ago.

For this one - yes, you could easily easily get all the glass gazing codes by going to that panel downtown. Everything you need to know is visible from the intersection. You can most likely get the codes by simply driving by the intersection (especially if you're not the driver) as well. And yes, if you have some knowledge of the businesses around the panel and a bit of recent news, you can probably get all the codes without going downtown.

But as I said before, I encourage all to go there. I haven't been to first code's place just yet, but I'd like to. The second (with the bear) is a favorite of mine - worth a visit. And I love looking in the windows of the third. Don't believe the naysayers who complain about parking and traffic. It's not that bad.

i looked.
it was s/s gallery. and starbucks, and an occasional gift shop
i tried all three, and many of the nearby shops too. not working.
i must be very dense

@Bookbird: Google for a list of what you are looking for on main st ann arbor. One of the results gives you a directory. Click the links for ones that have just two words in the name. You'll find one that has a bear.

sifted through the downtown directory for main street two word businesses. bear is not a search term. will post if I solve it. hope it's soon. I do want to get closer to the top o the Leaderboard. tried all the possible buisnesses. *sigh* I guess one more hint is needed......

Whereas, I need help with the last clue of oldnewsmakers. It's the one about sedgwick's daughter.
I've tried her name and promenade, the street, etc.... I've looked at all the articles and it just doesn't come up with an easy 4 word phrase to describe a "limb lined streetscape"

thank you asiangirl! I finally got everything!
as for your code, it's the name of one of the words you wrote...... the other word for high school dance is part of it. sorry if it's unclear. don't want to give it all away:)

Yes, the longer version of the name is on the AADL site, but it's not in the first thing you found with the name. Keep looking around for the name until you find a longer version of it.

@mengland , I was wondering the same thing, so I am glad you asked. Yes, how is it that some players have 330 extra points? Did the rest of us miss a bonus opportunity, or is there a bonus for being the first person to finish a quest? That's my pet theory: 330 extra each for two people and two quests so far is suggestive IMO.

Extra points idea - a 'first finisher' bonus? Actually, I thought I was first to finish this time, and I don't have a bonus. Could be I'm wrong, though. I saw I was the first to have 20000 points on SQ, so I thought I was first to finish. But that could be a display update problem - I could be second or third or something in finish time.

Another idea: Perhaps those with the extra 330 pointed out problems in the quest. I've seen AADL staff award bonus points to those who uncover a significant problem in the game or on the site.

So I just found the CITRON code and it says it expired Sept. of 2012. Except this wasn't even posted until October of 2012. Is this an error?
