Sorry Completionists! Only one thing to do about those annoying event badges... go to the event! It's not just for kids, it's an all ages event. Something for everyone for sure, and so, so many points to be had. You can get almost 10,000 points just by finishing artist's alley, which is all on the 3rd floor downtown. And maybe, just maybe, there will still be a way to collect the Artist badges and the questing paladin badge without even going to KRC... but who knows? =)

Unfortunately, that's only happening Eli, if you miraculously transport some of those artists to Malletts. ;) If I was Downtown, I'd hit some on my lunch hour. Ahh well. Such is life. :)

COOL

The Ariel MeMe has me stumped on the DVD and book. I'm sure I know the name of the publishing company - but can't find a single book!

Disappointed that I'll not be able to get to the comics event. Looks like there will be some neat artists there too.

Agreed, VLong. Am stuck at my other job today and at Traverwood all day tomorrow. Would have loved to swing by this event on a break. Can we build some sort of "Beam Me Up" transport device between the branches? You IT guys can totally do that, right? ;)

Made it to the tail end of KRC tonight... boy, was it great! I was able to talk to over 30 artists. It was fascinating. So many great stories! So much great art! (So many drawings of *adorable* robots!)

I don't know if I would have checked it out if not for the summer game - so thanks for the added motivation!

I'm writing this from Gaylord. There will be no way that I can get to KRC. That stinks. I guess that I have to get reading. Maybe there should be a separate leaderboard for people who can't get to all these events.

So many new badges! Too bad I might not make it. What exactly are we supposed to find for the third famous fairy spotting code?

Our family earned the KRC questing paladin yesterday. It took about 90 minutes during our first effort, then we had to come back later for about 20 minutes to get the artists who were at workshops earlier. We would recommend bringing your phone and texting the codes as you go. We thought we had everyone, but were missing three. So we were able to check our accounts for the ones that were missing and go back to find them.

Re: Zhengyang1022
Artist Alley is AWESOME. You get to meet so many different TALENTED comic artists and writers. You can even meet Jannie Ho, the person who designed Summer Game 2011.

My youngest son and I spent a lot of time at Artists' Alley yesterday, but didn't realize that EVERYONE had codes. We only collected 4 or 5 from artists (the ones who had their paper prominently displayed on their table). Oh well, I guess we'll have to talk to them again today! My son certainly won't mind.

As far as you people complaining that codes are tied to events: that's been true all along. Granted, there are a lot more for this one, and even though we went yesterday and were planning to return today, the prospect of gathering all those codes is daunting. But I haven't been whining about missing out because I can't make it to the Top of the Park events or because I'm not even interested in the Game+Watch events, or that other things take place while i have previously scheduled commitments. This is supposed to be fun, enjoy what you can and appreciate that life is about making choices.

The artist valley was AMAZING! I saw a bunch of people from summer game there :D and the art is really cool! I really liked this program. Is it possible to have a program like this for manga artists?

I met up with Smiles and we got a bunch of codes. :D
I met Bookbird, cherylo, and another player there. I even swapped codes! We should have a player-meeting sometime. It was so cool seeing all of my fellow players.

It was really nice meeting you too! After meeting you I feel inspired to make a badge...but I don't know if I can... :(
I have a slight idea, but I'm not really sure. Plus, I probably won't have any time.

@Morgsush: I bet you could make a badge, you seem clever enough. Start with thinking about what topic you want. Don't try to necessarily sit down and do the whole thing all at once. Let it just mull over in your brain while you're doing other things (chores at home, traveling in the car, etc.). :) Don't defeat yourself before you try. :)

I'm currently trying to come up with one myself and I know how tough it is. But you made it through the Treasure Key Quest so I bet you can come up with one if you work on it little by little. :)

I'd love to have a player meeting. :)

@Morgsush, keep thinking about your idea. It does take a little work. I'm very proud of having created a quest, so I suspect you would also be proud of yourself. I'm working on some more, so hopefully you will see some more badges from me. It does take more work to create the badge with the idea, development, and writing, but that's okay because it entertains as much as doing the badge would if it you didn't already know the codes.

KRC was pretty cool. All of the artists had such amazing work...I arrived there later on Sunday and it was almost closing time so I didn't get to see all of the art in detail....sigh....I wish I could have stayed there longer!

Re: tree64
You haven't commented in a long time...

Anyways, yeah it doesn't do anything, but they can use that to get the code without actually trying to find the item in the catalog. It's like a shortcut to the code. :(

Edit: Duplicated comments... And I was a little impatient and pressed two too many times...

Re: Bookbird
You met Smiles/Shoto (she said that you two were both getting a code and you asked her if she played the Summer Game and she said yes), and then she told me that she had met Bookbird. So she dragged me over, and you passed me and (kind of) nodded and I waved hi. We didn't really meet properly or talk.

KRC was great, it was interesting to see other people there for the summer game. So much work to get codes, but so many points I went from 20 to 10! (no telling how long I'll be able to stay there) I only wish I could have stayed at some of the events longer, but I had to make it to other locations to get more codes.

I managed to get to KRC for a couple of hours today after a marathon drive home from FL yesterday and early today. Unfortunately, I ran out of time to get all the artist codes. There were too many cool people to talk to about everything and anything nerdy in the artist's alley! :D

Hey, I just realized, none of these badges are showing up light on the page, even though I only have a few of them. Did the ghosted normal version for unearned + full color earned badge used for the mouseover not happen for these badges?

Correction: it works as expected on the badges page, but on this post they are not ghosted out if unearned.

ugh...

I'm back from a round trip to new york which started from 9am to 12:35am (morning to midnight). This is a one day trip just to drop off my oldest brother at a collage training camp in Buffalo. We didn't even have time for sightseeing. Oh well. What did I miss?

Morgsush, without digging into the page source code and comparing it, I suspect it was a minor error in setting up this post. Either a mistake was made in which URLs were used for the initial images or there's an error in the JavaScript that is mistakenly treating the badges as earned no matter what (a mistake in the conditional test). Or they made a stylistic decision to not ghost the images on this blog post. :)

I just found out how to add a game code to an item in a catalog (no, it doesn't add any points when I enter the code in)...
Don't worry; I won't go around adding fake codes.
(Although, perhaps some of the staff pages should edit their privacy settings.)

crud, I missed 7 badges, 60 codes, and so many points....

...When are they going to put up new items and the (possibly) point-o-matic shop?

Morgsush, i don't think people can use it to cheat. i've tried tagging one before, and after entering it, nothing actually happens.

I'm a little stuck: can anybody point me in the right direction to find a Goodfellow and finish the fairies badge?

Nevermind: post and solve (find).

I have a proposal. I am thinking of going to one of the library locations on Saturday morning and hanging out, say from 10-11 am. I will probably work on the newest crop of badges, read something, write reviews, or otherwise quest after summer game goodies. And if you feel like dropping by to say hello, chat about the summer game, trade hints and helps, well, that would be nice too.

Which location would be good? Malletts is my closest branch, but I am willing to consider another location if bunches of you tell me another would work better. I will also have to work out a way for other players to identify me. ::ponders:: Maybe some kind of silly summer game hat?

Cherlyo:

Mallets Creek sounds good for me, but I wonder how many people will show up. If there are too many, there may not be enough space. Perhaps there are players who would attend but don't normally talk in the comments very much.

How about a rough RSVP count? I might be there, with my two kids.

Yes: 1
Maybe:3

Total: 4

Logan, several people have said they can and will be at Malletts tomorrow, so I will be at Malletts. I can go to another library another week if there is interest. Hoe about we plan for a downtown meet next week on the 21?

We're going to go to Mallett's Creek this morning, but we (my kids and I) might not make it between 10 and 11. But I'll still be wearing my summer game shirt.

Can't make it to Malletts, but I am at Traverwood. See if you can find me. ;)

Edit: I saw the Ready Player One contest, but I know that I have absolutely no hope of winning it, no matter how badly I want that Delorean.

I can't drive, and I am horrible at video games. There's no way I'm winning that contest (though I might try to find the secret URL hidden in the book. I'm just a sucker for that kind of challenge).

Re: cherylo
That seems like a great idea. Finally, a player meeting! The only problem is that Malletts Creek is a little far from me, but that's okay. Saturday, from 10-11 AM, at Malletts Creek, right? Hopefully I can convince my parent to take me. This will also be great for me because I need the code for the Branch Explorer Badge and I want to visit the caterpillars. :)

I'll be glad to help anyone with any of the badges (but I'm not sure about the newest badge drop this Saturday).

Great! I'm so glad there is interest in getting together!

I have another question that I've been pondering...how can a person earn Secret Shop tokens, besides doing the Treasure Quest? I'm wondering and hoping that there will be a way to earn them revealed at some point, and preferably before the shop opens. Or maybe you have to earn the right to trade summer game points for tokens? or...? My mind is brimming with possibilities, and hoping for resolutions, to these questions. :)

Eli hasn't really said anything about converting points into tokens, but it seems like a good idea.
I just hope that when the Secret Shop opens, none of the items in it are over three tokens.

It seems like something is wrong with the distribution of the SecretShop Tokens. Looking at the TrrasureQuest leaderboard, I counted 20 people who finished TreasureQuest. However, there are only 16 people actually on the SecretShop Token leaderboard. I realize that people who finish TreasureQuest now only get 1 Token, but the numbers still don't match up. Could it be that the summer game-makers have not had time to award the tokens to the players? Or is there another reason?

Re: tree64
How do you know if they finished Treasure Quest or not?
Edit: Duh. Their points. *face palm*

(eli is probably just busy because of KRC and all of the other Summer Game stuff.)

Well, in order to get the Secret Shop Tokens, all you had to do was get all of the keys, not finish the Treasure Quest. Maybe that's why you aren't seeing everyone on the leaderboards.

I think the shop tokens are awarded manually, so it's probably a backlog and the staff who have that ability being very busy the last week or two.

Yes, Malletts, 10 am this Saturday. ::happy::

The reading room is meant to be a quiet area, so no, not there.

This is why I said I need a silly summer game hat or something. How about the cafe area in the front? That seems like the least likely spot to disrupt other patrons.

Also, there is an 11 am clay animation workshop in the program room at Malletts, so that is a natural segue.
:)

Re: cherylo
Really? I thought the claymation puppet workshop was on Sunday July 15, 2012, from 12:00 pm to 5:00?

Edit: Never mind. That's the adult one. The teen (Grade 6-12) workshop is on Saturday July 14, 2012, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Hope I can go! :)

I was just scrolling through the comments toward AADL (this has nothing to do with the comments on here), and I noticed one particular comment.
Yes eli, you are a genius for writing those item descriptions (especially the duck description). They were hilarious. You DO deserve a bonus. ;)

@Morgsush - Okay, sorry, I'm a totally ignorant adult on this one (though I'm guessing it's something to do with manga), but "yay" for having a topic idea! Keep going! Figure out what *parts* of that topic you want to cover and go from there.

Oh. I met you when we were both waiting to get a game code from the author in the "quiet study rooms" but I wasn't dragging Morgsush to meet you at that time. I was dragging her to meet you afterwards but I think you guys only waved at each other.

Vanishing of the Bees . Tonight at downtown, 6:30pm to 8:30pm. I was wrong, I'm most likely NOT going to be there. Parent's excuse: parking, dinner, not telling beforehand. If your going, tell me about it tomorrow, it sounds interesting.
I remember now Smiles! Well, meeting you in front of the quiet room part. I actually didn't hear you username, or real name. I just heard something about being in the hundreds, which, combined with my not-so-great memory of people, lead me to think I didn't meet you. Unfortunately, I also didn't remember Morgsush, or the waving part. Sorry. But the Mallets Creek meeting sounds good.

Re: cherylo
We'll probably meet in the cafe, but shouldn't we go to the computers after that? After all, the Summer Game is online and if we get clues about badges and we want to enter the codes in, we'll have to do it online. Plus, it'll be a chance to connect the username to the person.

Think time and date everyone for Mallets Creek, I really want to be able to get there. Morgsush, I also hope I can go, but dinner is now, and will most likely go on to 7:30. By then my parents will most likely say "it's a movie, isn't it too late by now? " and similar. *sigh*

Um, sure, Morgsush, I think we could move back to the computers and/or the tables in the middle if that works better. Or be in both places. See,I plan to bring at least my tablet and possibly my laptop computer too. There are advantages to being an adult that offset the relative lack of free time. :D

Good idea about wearing summer game stuff. I have mine from last year and I try to wear it to library events, although I didn't have it on at KRC. Maybe I'll bring my laptop in my magic bag

If everyone wears their AADL stuff, it'll be so much easier to recognize who plays and who doesn't.
But I guess you could just find us at the front cafe area...

Re: vlong
Otaku: Otaku, おたく / オタク, is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga or video games (from Wikipedia). I guess the badge is going to test your knowledge of popular Japanese culture.
The badge will involve manga and anime. However, I also want to introduce j-pop (japanese pop) as part of the badge, as well as dramas (does the AADL catalog even have any?).
I'll probably make it more of a Treasure Quest style (you might have to go on to other websites for research).

This badge is in honor of my dear friend Grace who is obsessed with Japan (Smiles, you know her). ^ - ^

Oh, and cherylo? Did you write the badge description and the amounts of points for each code in your email? I don't know if I should do that...

Morgsush, I wrote suggested code phrases, but did not suggest point values. I figured the points for badges were for the most part pretty standard and based roughly on how many codes each badge required to earn. I did write all the bits of text including the original badge description and clue phrases.

Reply to Cherylo
I thought your badge was pretty good, challenging enough for the active players but not impossible if you're unfamiliar with the authors. So far, I would rank the fairy badges as easiest because my 8YO daughter has been able to do them mostly on her own, and they generally have about 300 people earning them. 100 badge-earners places it among the harder ones if you compare it to the others.

I just looked at the science fiction etc badge and noticed who made it! i think any badge that takes a long time to me is hard, which is most badges. About the meeting, yes cafe then computers, but why not just computers?

Because there are likely to be people already there, and since it's a player meeting we'll probably want to know who's a player and who's not. I guess we'll just meet in the front and introduce ourselves, and then when a substantial amount of players come we'll head to the computers.

@Morgsush: What a neat idea! My friend who died would've really liked that. He was a big fan of Japanese culture (and history). :) Good luck with it!

I'm trying to work on one. I submitted one earlier but now that I'm looking at this year's badges, I'm thinking the idea I submitted at first wasn't very good. So, now I'm working on something different.

We were in the cafe area until about half past 11, but it was just Morgsush, Smiles, and me chatting and sharing info. We can try again next week, maybe at Downtown?

@Bookbird - just fyi, I don't know if you knew, but the AATA does not actually stop near Pittsfield. It's about a 1/2 mile to mile walk to either of the closest bus stops. So I don't know if that makes any difference for a player meeting or not (I don't know if any of you ride the bus or not). Also, if the owl program is as popular as the birds of prey one was at Malletts, be prepared for huge amounts of people. :)

I know! I just saw it...

Please peoples? 10-11 am at Downtown? This is the last player meeting, and I would love to work together with other players to earn the KRC Superfan badge.

If that doesn't work, I can do 1-4 pm at Traverwood.

I'd suggest the tables on the third floor as a meeting place at Downtown, unless you have another idea, Morgsush? Its going to be a challenge to meet there today due to Art Fair but I will try to make it.

I'm not making it this morning either...it turns out my daughter needs more help than I originally thought packing to go to girl scout camp tomorrow; we're working on that now. But I do expect to come by Malletts at some point today to pick up my first shop order, so I will try to make a point of finding and introducing myself to you.

@cherylo - Great! The only time I won't be around is 1-2 as that's my lunch. :) Otherwise I'll be here.

@Morgsush: I wish I could make it up to Traverwood but alas, not gonna work out. Even if I came up on my lunch hour, it'd only give me about 10 minutes and I'd have to skip actually eating, which for me isn't wise as I have blood sugar issues. :-/ Sorry!

Morgsush: I'll be at Traverwood at some point, are you going to be in the owl events from 1-2 and 3-4? I'll try to post updates when I know more specifically what my time line is like, but looks like it'll be 1:30/2:00.

vlong: I'm going to try to get to Mallets before. How would I recognize you?

In reply to by Ilyjtwya

@ilyjtwya: I'm at the circ desk - green shirt and flowered skirt and glasses. I might be shelving holds but I won't be too far from the desk. :)

I'm at Traverwood (I was confusing the events at Pittsfield earlier, was thinking they were at Traverwood. Is anyone else here? I wore my summer game shirt.

vlong: Is the circulation desk where you check out books and pay fines? Walked around looking for you, and haven't seen any one in a green shirt, flowered skirt and glasses. I'm near the desk, are you still around?

Argh... I <em>really</em> want that Superfan badge... Anyone willing to give me their email so we can exchange codes? I only need 6 more codes to get the badge!

@cherylo: It was good to finally meet you. I'm sure I'll see you again since Malletts seems to be your home branch. :)

@ilyjtwya: Glad we finally met up. :) Sorry about the mixup at first - I was in back room for a bit, which I didn't expect to do. I hope you were able to get all the building codes while you were here!

@Morgsush: Sorry I can't help with the codes, but I was working that weekend. I hope someone else has the codes and can send them to you!

It's only thanks to both of you that I was able to have any of the KRC codes at all, so thank you! :) I know that I have to miss out on the event ones most of the time because I'm working, but that event had more than usual so I was disappointed to miss it.

I love all the badges and actually have considered maybe printing them out as stickers with the inkjet sticker paper I have at home.

@vlong, that makes me wonder whether sticker or button versions of the badges should be the next type of prize that we players ask for! I think I would totally spend points to collect physical versions of badges. Something to think about, Eli and Andrew and other staff?

@cherylo - I would definitely spend points to have physical versions of the badges. I always get so excited when my GetGlue stickers come in - I love stickers (honestly, probably the only reason I really use GetGlue in the first place!). Perhaps they'll see our suggestion/comments here and implement them. :)

Morsush:

No closer after seeing Vlong. She had to work at another location during KRC :( Maybe everyone else can keep trying any send you results after you leave.

cool!

Did I miss the 3rd badge drop? I thought there were only 2 so far. Oh well! The more the better.

I can't wait for the new badges! I've been so bored this week without a ton of badges to look for, since most of the badges dropped last week were for the KRC & I couldn't go.

We took longer than I expected. We'll just be going to Mallets at some point today. I'm bummed that we missed everyone.

@ilyjtwya: Woo hoo.. thanks to the help I got from you and by extension from Morgsush, I jumped from 4th to 1st on the staff leader boards. I had just about resigned myself to being stuck in 4th. I just couldn't seem to make enough comments, write enough reviews, or read/watch enough stuff to get myself out of 4th place. So <strong>thank you</strong> again for being willing to share! :) Too bad we couldn't manage to come up with the other six for Morgsush tho'. :(

I wonder if the missing codes were events on Saturday or not at the Library. I know there was an event at the Robot Repair and Supply on Liberty. Too bad the badge doesn't have hints like "Check out _ at 2:30 on Sunday", so we could at least figure out what it was.

Did you get a badge guide when you were at KRC? It listed all of the workshops, I think. I've recycled mine or I would offer to look at it.

Edit: it is linked above in the original post!

@Zhengyang - I'm fairly short - glasses, long brown hair that I usually wear tied back. I work at circulation, not reference so I'm usually either standing at the desk or attempting to shelve holds. Afternoon is the best time to find me here. :)

@Zhengyang - Not a problem and you're not indebted to me at all. :) I wouldn't have been able to help you if I hadn't received help from ilyjtwya. :) Glad I can help.

I met ilytwya at Pittsfield the day of the owls and got help, so I'm guessing we all have the same thing, mostly. The Owls, they talked about where they lived, the ears, well I know the stuff already. The only nwe thing was that owls don't just yarp pellets, they have another form of waste too. Forgot the name.

Um, Morgsush, you realize you're one of if not the biggest commenter, with comments about how many comments there are, including marking the page milestones when we can see there are X pages ourselves too, right?

money! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
your rich, if the money actually was usable

In reply to by Bookbird

So true, but the money sign doesn't really mean much, it should be "Here's your money, $100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000" like that.

I know, but it wouldn't be obvious thatI was responding to your comment when I commented. If I had just commented instead of adding the thoughts, then It would just seem like I was simply entering your conversation, not reacting to your comment.

In reply to by gxl

When you went "WAHAHAHAHA", Smiles wanted to know if that was supposed to be a mad scientist cackle.
And from my point of view, it's not. Mad scientist cackles begin with a "mwa". As in "MWAHAHAHA!"
Think of it as "moi", since mad scientists and villans are usually vain and arrogant.
MOI-HAHAHAHAHA!!!
