Ah the fine art of sewing! Everyone has some familiarity with this craft, it’s how our clothes are made, after all. But the craft has come a long way since the early days, when the primary materials used were needles carved from animal bones or antlers, and animal sinews, instead of thread, were used to bind two pieces of animal hide together. If that all sounds rather primitive, it’s because it is! We have found evidence of sewing as far back as the Paleolithic Age! The oldest artifact identified as part of a sewing needle comes from South Africa, and is dated at about 61,000 years old. That’s downright ANCIENT. You’ll find your next clue--and more information about life in the Paleolithic Age--with a DVD about life in the ancient world.
