There's a long tradition of literary hoaxes - from famous forgeries to made-up memoirs. In 1796, William Henry Ireland claimed that he was in possession of a previously-unknown Shakespeare play. The tricky part here is that to pull off this hoax, he had to actually a play to pass off as the work of Shakespeare. Unsurprisingly, our intrepid Ireland just couldn't quite pull off writing a play that could pass as the work of one of the world's best known and loved playwrights. His play, Vortigern and Rowena was SO BAD that skeptics in the audience started calling him out by the second act. It took, like a minute, to know this wasn't the work of a master. Ireland later confessed and became part of the legend of Shakespeare forgeries. See if you can find a Tale of a such an Obsession to start things off.
