Walk Around the Art

Difficulty: ????
Exploration Badge
Part of the SummerGame2017 Game

This week we’re sending you to the main campus of the University to find some sculptures near the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). This badge will be on flat, paved surfaces. And is always the case in the summer there is CONSTRUCTION seemingly everywhere - so keep this in mind before heading out. This handy site may be of some assistance

The first piece you need to find is on Thompson Street between William and Jefferson - two blocks from State Street. Once you have parked and found your way look for an angular, shiny, silver sculpture that is right next to the U’s Institute for Social Research (and it’s marked with one of those nice blue & maize signs out front). Now walk around the art and find the plaque (nicely placed near a trash can). Your first game code is the artist’s last name plus the year it was donated:

Now take a short walk over to State Street to make your way to the UMMA. You know that big red sculpture out front? The same artist that created that one also created the large dark steel one right in front of the Frankel Family Wing. Make your way to it and locate the plaque in front of it. Your next game code is the year the artist was born plus the 4 letter name of the gallery who donated it. You know what’s cool? One of the entrants of our annual LEGO Contest created such a stunning replica of the UMMA that they took notice! Check it out

Now you want to make your way around the UMMA by heading south towards S. University. The rest of what you are looking for is around two more sides of the museum so it’s a contained space. Once you turn left onto S. University look for the next sculpture - a really large piece of steel again. Walk around the art and then look for the plaque. Your next game code is the type of steel it was made from plus the title of the sculpture

Now travel around behind the museum - turning left when you see the “Tappan Hall” sign. Keep going and when you see the bike racks on your left you’re getting close to your next destination. Since you can’t climb into the landscape and literally walk around these pieces ponder them and then look for the plaque. Your next game code is the artist’s middle name plus the year she was born

Now you want to walk a little further and climb up the small platform at the rear of the museum and go towards the pale blue/grey, slightly bulbous sculpture on the pedestal. Take the time to do the walk around and then find the plaque. Your next game code is the artist’s last name plus the year he died.

Now turn to your right and make your way over to the other sculpture in the same area. This work requires a full walk around the art since there are so many details and perspectives to be had from every angle. Now locate the plaque. Your next game code is the artist’s last name plus the year he was born

You are almost done! Your last sculpture is across the way from where you are standing on the grass - note that the day the game maker was there the tree above it is touching the top of the art so it’s a little obscured. It’s got round shapes on top and a pyramid shape at the bottom. Locate the plaque and your last game code is the artist’s last name plus the year she was born

Nice work game players! You’re done with the official part of the badge, but hopefully take some time to walk around campus or visit the museum if it’s open! The exhibits are always changing so there’s always something new to see!
