Victor Lustig was known as "the man who sold the Eiffel Tower," because he did. Twice. It was, of course, a hoax, because Lustig was a con man. A smooth operator. A grifter. A...well, just a really good liar, when you get right down to it. His cons were brash, they were bold, they were too unbelievable to *not* be true! So when he gathered scrap dealers in 1920s Paris and announced he was contracted by the government to select someone to dismantle the Eiffel Tower and sell it as scrap, they believed him. And when the poor sap who was "selected" discovered he'd been conned, he was too embarrassed to report the crime -enabling ol' Trusty Lusty to get back to the City of Light and try the scam again. Being "the man who sold the Eiffel Tower" results in a pretty big reputation - but check the catalog for a Man Who Sold something even bigger.
