Cook's Quad

Difficulty: ????
Exploration Badge
Part of the SummerGame2016 Game

Let’s start exploring our town with the first in the Arbor Explorer Badge series! This week let’s travel to a very special spot on the University of Michigan central campus. Start your tour at the corner of S. University & State Street. You will be standing closest to the Lawyer’s Club, which was the first building built in what would become the Quad in 1924. There are some very friendly (and fat) squirrels and chipmunks who live in the quad too!

Let’s start looking for gamecodes by walking east on S. University and then turning right down the first archway (you will be behind the Lawyer’s Club now). As you walk through the archway be sure to look at the ‘corbels’ or human-figures who look like they are holding the arch and stone on their shoulders. Keep going straight and look for the first bench on your left. Your first gamecode is the last name of the person who this bench is memorializing:

Keep going a little bit and look for the 2nd bench - your next gamecode is the last name for this bench:

Now you will be near the Lawyer’s Club door - start following the stone path from here. Follow the diagonal path towards the Law Library and look for the old ‘man hole’ cover (should be on your left). The city listed on this cover is your next code:

Now keep following this path towards the flag pole. Stop at the flag pole and look for the plaque in front of it. Your next gamecode is the word at the bottom of the plaque - it describes someone in charge.

Keep on going and walk towards the gorgeous Law Library. Go towards the steps of the library and look for the writing above the ornate light fixtures on each side. The one on the right mentions the state of Michigan. Now look for the one on the left. There are 3 words listed (the top one is a downtown Ann Arbor street name). Your next gamecode is these 3 words together:

Now you want to turn around and travel on the diagonal path that takes you to the northeast corner of the quad. You’re going to be entering the arch at the end of the path and looking at the human-figure corbels. Look closely and find the football player - he’s dressed a little different but you can see the stiches on the football. Now keep looking up and find the figure to his right. This guy is clearly holding some fruit. The plural of this fruit is your next gamecode:

Now we’re going to leave this arch and turn left on S. University and head towards the sign that says “Munger Residences in the Lawyers Club.” When you get there turn left into the main archway entrance to the quad. Locate the plaque on the left that says “Law Quadrangle 1924-1933.” Read through the plaque your LAST gamecode for this badge is the one-word name of the granite used to build the buildings.

That’s the end of this tour! Hopefully if you visited during opening hours you went into the Law Library - it’s absolutely stunning! If you want to learn more about the history of the Law Quad - including the controversy at the time of whose faces went on the corbels check out this article http://heritage.umich.edu/stories/when-heads-rolled/
