Badge Drop #6: It's Art AND it's Fair!

by andrewjmac

Hey, did you guys notice that there's some kind of thing going on downtown this week? Hello? Oh, did you all leave town? Well, whether you're running to pick up some art or practicing the art of running away, rest assured that your friendly neighborhood AADL has been busy with the FINE ART OF BADGEMAKING! And this badge drop is FILLED TO BURSTING with all kinds of handcrafted (okay, some computercrafted) goodness including 3 more amazing LEGO creations to check out around town, mashed up words, dam disasters, and wiki-goodness, PLUS two fresh new PowerArt! badges where you can get points for checking out the art that ISN'T going to pack up and leave come Sunday!

OH WAIT! You guys probably want to hear how AMAZING you are doing this Summer Game! I'd better give you your stats fix! (Or is it MY stats fix? Do you guys even care about how AMAZING you are? Or are you too busy BEING AMAZING? How many more times do you think I can use the word AMAZING?) The 4609 PLAYERS playing have gotten 31,292 BADGES and earned 33,788,242 POINTS!!! Not impressed? What about if I tell you that that's more points than were earned in the ENTIRE SUMMER GAME 2014! And we're only halfway through! Would you call that...AMAZING?!!!

Debuting this week is the super snazzy Above Board badge, your chance to get a badge and MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD at an upcoming Ann Arbor District Library Board meeting! You can earn this one by attending and making a public comment at either the July 20th or the August 17th meetings, so mark those dates on your calendars!

If you weren't already going to come downtown this weekend, maybe you should think about it now that there are loads of LEGO and plenty of PowerArt! If you can't bring yourself to do that (or if you are currently holed up in your house, trying in vain to forget about $20 parking places and bowls made out of things that were not intended to be bowls), you can always check those things out later and just spend your time perusing the SUMMER GAME SHOP, purveyor of extremely tasteful items covered in the AADL logo!

Don't forget that even when tents have taken over your town, SUMMER GAME IS ALWAYS HERE FOR YOU! THANKS FOR PLAYING!

Comments

Thank you AADL for giving me something to do this weekend while I hide indoors with the shades closed, trying to forget that it feels like 100 degrees outside!

No way am I going to brave both the heat and the art fair. Lego searching can happen next weekend.

I loved the Etymologies one again. But the Mario one was rough and the Flintstones one is still driving me crazy. What am I missing in the second clue? I need two actors' last names, right? I searched the last name of the second actor (after having no luck searching with the possible last name of the voice actor), got 44 results, looked in each one, and found nothing. ???

For folks who might not have yet earned the Down for the Council badge as a part of the CivCity Badge Series Drop #4 (or who just want to earn even more SG points!) this Sunday evening is an easy 250:

ATTEND THE CITY COUNCIL CAUCUS IN COUNCIL CHAMBERS AT CITY HALL, SUNDAY JULY 19 STARTING AT 7PM.

That's a meeting you have to show up for in person to earn the points, because CTN doesn't record those meetings. So you'll be earning points that your competitors can't go back in time to earn through the magic of recorded video. There'll probably be some talk about non-partisan elections at the Sunday Caucus. That's an issue will be on the council's business meeting agenda for the following Monday. Monday's meeting is also worth SG points!

I am wondering if any of you summer gamers could offer another clue to help me out on July 16th download of the day? I have tried out every answer I can think of to no avail.
Thanks so much for the help

To all the summer gamers out there I am working on two badges right now and I am having a great deal of trouble finding the code words for both.

1) I am working on the badge "The one with the badge" and I am having trouble finding the third codeword about Ross.

2) and I am working on the scooby doo badge and I am having trouble finding the very last codeword about pickles with that one.
Thanks so much for the help
Lmd3577

@Lmd3577

1) Try searching for Ross's favorite fighting style on Google. It's not one of the top results. (Hint: It's actually not a fighting style...)

2) Remember that Wetherall is capital, which must mean that it's important. When you search it in the catalog, it will lead you to a teen book. Click on that and look under the "Additional Credits." Search the name of this person to find the book that you're looking for.

Hope this helps!

I'm working on the Trekking Around The Universe badge and am having trouble with the final code. I thought I had the obvious answer, but all I found was a code from summer 2013. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I need some guidance on the mario badge. I tried the many different names of the dino for the first clue that were mentioned on the wiki page. None of them work as a code. What am I missing?

@elsbetherin

Find a wiki page about the character that has his "scientific name" - an initial, a longer form of Yoshi and a long second name. Enter that second name as your code.

I am having difficulties with the second code of the "Power Up" badge. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I got the trekking around the universe badge! Anybody need help on the first: Look for a shakespeare play in a book for the code.

Thanks for helping me get this badge it is so cool!!!

I am having difficulties with the last code of the "Portmanteautally Awesome" badge. Any hints? Thanks!

@kathscot

Thanks so much! I found the code and finished the "Portmanteautally Awesome" Badge. Now, I am having trouble with the fourth code of the "Power Up" badge. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

For the fourth code for the Power Up badge I didn't even look for the pun, I just used a key word in the hint to search the catalog. But I'm stuck on the last code. I thought I knew what I was looking for, but no luck so far. If only my sons weren't away at camp, I'm sure they would just know all the answers!

Edit: never mind, I got it. It just took slowing down and reading the clue AGAIN, only carefully this time.

Just letting you know that I created a page on arborwiki. I was signed in, so you should be able to find it, but let me know if not.

I am having trouble finding today's download of the day. I have tried every answer I know of to no avail. I am hoping some of you gamers out there could help me with another clue to help me find the download.
Thanks so much for the help
Lmd3577

I'm stuck on the 4th code for the Power Up badge. I found the game series and the 3rd game which seems to be about getting back at someone, but I have no idea what the "pun" is or how to find it in over 600 magazines.

I am seeing a square marked "Lasers, Supercomputers and Urban Planning in Detroit" on this page, but when I click on it, I see the Trekking around the Universe badge.

@willow

The "Lasers, Supercomputers and Urban Planning in Detroit" is actually the theme that Nerd Nite is presenting. It's all about lights and lasers. (So basically, I am seeing exactly what is written below the picture)

@AprilCDB, I typically pick a few badge categories to focus on rather than try to finish everything. That way I can still feel like I'm completing something (a category) even when I can't do everything!

@camelsamba, that's what I've been trying to do, keep up on a few areas, but it just seems to keep growing each week. I just made some good progress today, wandered around downtown for a couple of hours and found several Lego and PowerArt codes.

To all the summer gamers out there I am working on three badges and I need some helping finding three codewords.

1) Avatar badge the first codeword

2) she dectives the second codeword

3) and power up the fourth codeword

Thanks so much for the help
Lmd3577

Lmd3577

For the first code word in the Avatar badge:

1. Search "martial arts avatar waterbending is based on" on Google

2. Click on the website at the top of the list. That website will tell you what martial art style you need.

Those are so cool badges! I got the Girl on fire badge, The burst of times badge, and the super tag master! But I need help on the second code of Avatar the last Airbadge. Awesome new badges!!!

Who needs help? If on what? I am happy to help!!!

Fritzy

Thank you so much! Now I have the second code!

What a treat! My daughter and I went to the Cobblestone Farm farmers' market yesterday to get the badge, hoping to get the bonus code. We didn't manage to do that, but we did get a guided tour of the farmhouse.

To all the summer gamers out there I am working on three badges right now and I need help finding codewords for them. The three I am working on right now are hard and even with the extra clues given I am having a tough time finding the codewords.

1) Avatar the last air bender badge I am having trouble finding the very first codeword

2) She dectives badge I am having trouble finding the second codeword

3) Power up badge I am having trouble finding the fourth codeword

Thanks so much for the help
Lmd3577

The issue with the lasers showing up *in the badge area*, not under Nerd Nite, appears to be fixed but I have a screen shot I'd be happy to email AADL staff if they would like it.

I am not able to watch any of the City of Ann Arbor Meetings using On-Demand. When I click on the meeting that I would like to view, I cannot see the video at all. Any suggestions on how I could watch it online? Thanks!

Wow! The badges are getting harder and harder each week. I used to be able to find a Beginner badge and an Advanced badge with a short amount of time, but now I am having trouble finding the first code of the Beginner and Advanced badges from this week! I even finished the Expert badge!

With that said, I am having trouble finding the first code of the "Burst of Times" badge and the first code of the "Girl on Fire" badge. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

I would like to suggest (on behalf of my children) that easier badges be developed. The clues were much more direct in past years, on a level that is manageable for new players, children, and those lacking extensive background knowledge of, say, Miyazaki films. My kids have picked badges to work on with children's book characters, like Winnie the Pooh and Courduroy, and found them quite hard, if not impossible, or else requiring close reading of the Wikipedia page. I think it would be more fair to recognize the diversity of skills and background knowledge, and create more badges that are truly for beginners.

I agree with willow. My daughter always wants to try to get badges with me, and there's nothing she can do without a lot of help. I'm always grateful when there are badges you can earn for going places or finding codes in public places so she can see them on her player page.

My kids are always genuinely excited when they know the answer to a clue off the tops of their heads, for example from fairy tales or book characters or other firsthand knowledge, and doing random web searches or staring blankly at the screen just doesn't compare!

I've been thinking the same thing as other players this year, the clues seem much more difficult and require much more research, unless you happen to have first hand knowledge of the clue. For example, I've run into several that I felt like were very difficult for me to figure out because I have little to no knowledge of the subject. Like, the one referring to The Hunger Games. I've never read the books, nor watched the movies and I felt like the clues were written in such a way that I needed to have read and/or watched the books/movies. Even the tips make me feel like because I haven't read or watched something, they were useless. Like the tip referring to a Scottish lass known for her red hair, I've not seen that movie either and only figured it out after it came up in a Google search referring to that movie also being based off the same general background as The Hunger Games and vaguely recalling the cover picture on the movie had a female with a lot of red hair.

I'm totally lost on the third code for The Burst of Times badge - I found the movie, but when I dug it up in the catalog there was no code!

@Avliss: Unfortunately, I can't help, as I am stuck on that same code - like you, I found the movie I thought it was referring to, but there was no code. I feel like there must be some other hint in the clue that I'm not picking up on, but I can't think what.
Does anyone know what I'm missing?

Hey Gamers! It is a difficult game this year, and is seemingly getting more difficult. But I find the work that I have to do on badge with my kids in order to give help is a great bonding experience and elevates their learning, vocabulary and reading skills. My daughter is nine and has shocked me at times with how well she can understand the way of thinking that is required for the begginer up to probably the advanced badges. I have to sit with her most times and help her search the internet. It is a LOT more communication than we usually get, so I'm super grateful.
I basically live on the catalog anyway, so it's nice to have the challenges that are represented in the expert badges as well. If I don't finish it all at once or not even at all, I always come away knowing more than I did! : )

Thanks @SBNB!

@yaldah

I too was stuck on that same code, but if you read the earlier comment by @SBNB, you might be able to figure out what you did wrong. I had searched part of hint and not the clue.

To all the summer gamers outhther,
I am working on the Mega Marchers badge and I am having trouble with both the first and third codewords. For the first I have looked up what I think is the correct years but when I go to plug in the anwser I get that the code is not recognized so I am hoping some one could help me out to find the correct years for the anwser. For the third clue I lookde up what I think is also the correct anwser for the distant relitive and I have looked up tow of the ones I think are right and I still get several diffrent anwsers so I think I have got two wrong anwsers. I am hoping some of you could hepl me with some clues to help me find both the codeworsds I am looking for.
Thanks for the help
Lmd3577

to all the summer gamers out there,
I am working on two badges and I need help finging the code words for three different clues given.
1) Avatar: the very last code word I am having trouble finding
2) Marching band badge: I am having trouble with the first clue I think I have one of the wrong dates or both and anwser is not recgonized at all

3) and Marching band clue 3 I have looked up tow possible anwsers and for both I get several items to look through which must mean I have the wrong distant relitive they speak about.
Thanks so much for the help
Lmd3577

I am having trouble finding the third code for the "Burst of Times" badge. I think I found the correct movie, but I cannot find a code. Any hints? Thanks!

to all the summer gamers out there
I am working on the marching badge and I am having trouble with the very first code needed. I have googled up what I thing are the right years and I get code not recognized when I type in the anwser so I think i have one wrong year. I need some help finding the right years needed to add up to make the correct codeword I need to type in.
Thanks so much for the help

I just wanted to say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Harold and his crayon were included in a badge quest.

It was fun looking for the traffic signal boxes for the power art badges. Some of them are simply beautiful.

Looking forward to going to the downtown library this weekend. Will have to try and find some power art as well! :)

@Katharina Geschner - Google Sonic the Hedgehog and check a list of the characters, and that should help. And remember, you're looking for one that was previously a villain. :)

I love it when there's a badge drop and you get some automatically, like the tags or list ones. It's very encouraging and it's also a surprise gift.

Thanks for making those. :)

For the Bedrock 'N' Roll badge, I'm stuck on the third gamecode. When I search the catalog for the number and the girl's name, there are no matches except for a CD, but that's actually the fourth gamecode. Am I missing something? Was the gamecode misdirected somehow?

Thanks for the help!

I was scared speaking at the AADL board meeting, but after I did and got my code, I was glad I did it! That's the fun of the SG, it makes you get out there and try new things!

I am hooked on the Downloads of the Day! Next year I'll put more time into them during the game.
