Summer Game 2014: Game Over, Man! Game Over!

by andrewjmac

Well, Gamers, it's over. The cries of anguish have finally subsided. The tears have been wiped away. The sun rose (twice, so far!) and set (only once, but I wouldn't worry about it). But, hey, let's take a look back at how AMAZING this Summer Game really was!

Players Playing: an ASTOUNDING 4,920!
Badges Earned: an ASTONISHING 68,040!!
Codes Entered: an AMAZING 339,062!!!
Points Earned: an AWE-INSPIRING 30,033,470!!!!

In case you are wondering if those numbers BLOW NUMBERS FROM PREVIOUS YEARS OUT OF THE WATER, the answer is YES!!!

At times like these, questions long pushed to the back of the brain percolate to the top of one's consciousness: How will I live my life without the Summer Game? What can I look for at the library if there are no codes? Where will I share my opinions about things I've read/watched/listened to? What can I accomplish if I'm not earning badges? (Answers: You did just fine before June 13th! Books, CDs, DVDs, Tools, Art Prints, etc etc etc! You can still do that in the catalog, there are just no points for it! I dunno, learn to play the zither or something!)

But you can also play all of the non-Summer Game games available at play.aadl.org! Like Points-O-Matic, where you can help us figure out which reviews are helpful and which are not with a click of your mouse and where you can help us make our amazing old newspapers more searchable by entering text from hundred-year-old pages! Or Streets Quest, a game that takes you to many of the historic streets panels around town and teaches you the history of the city around you! How about Treasure Quest, a truly bonkers set of quests the will set you to decoding and deciphering your way through the catalog!

Or...how about A BRAND-NEW SET OF QUESTS, heretofore unseen in the annals of play.aadl.org! That's right, a new game is on its way! When? SOON! (But not too soon, let us recover from the Summer Game first.) Keep your eyes on play.aadl.org to find out when this new game begins!

And don't forget about all of those Summer Game points you earned this year! The Summer Game Shop stays open until 5 PM MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH, so get there and spend spend spend!

That's all for now! You players are what makes the Summer Game GREAT, and this year has been the GREATEST YEAR EVER, so thanks for a TRULY PHENOMENAL SUMMER GAME! And, one last time for 2014...

THANKS FOR PLAYING!

A SPECIAL thanks to Eli, for answering all of my silly questions promptly and concisely, and to the staff at the downtown branch for alerting us ( a little late, but never too late) to the mystifying diversion that is the Summer Games! My daughter read more this summer than any summer before! I'm also terribly grateful for the knowledge of the catalog and SO MANY other library resources ! The game shop was great too.I have yet to pick up my chocolate bars, but I have managed to obtain two green water bottles (we use everyday!) and some yummy coffee and travel mug, two bags and all I can I say is, seriously awesome! Thanks everyone!

Thank you AADL for another amazing game! I hope to pass the rest of 2014 with some badge design attempts of mine.

It was a fantastic summer, and I can't believe you are committing to a brand new game so quickly! I figured the Summer Game staff would be in recovery for weeks. You are hard-working people! I'm extremely interested in the prospect of a new game. :)

Thank you for the Summer Game! This was the first year that I got intense with the badges!

Thanks for a great Summer Games 2014, can't wait for next year! Hey, can I get points for this post!?!?!?

@Naverick22 - No idea. I got a text saying my stuff was ready, but it wasn't there. On a side note, I think someone in the game shop fulfillment area is playing a cruel joke on me. All the packets of tools I have received have been pretty much the same, and all the fruit packets have been exactly the same. Bah humbug.

Have you got any more of those little flashlights like the one my daughter got today as her mystery item with the mini eraser pack? I'd give a lot of points for one of those. :-)
Thanks again!

Thank you for such a great summer! And a special thanks is to Eli for all the work he has put into this year! I just got the highlighters, and I LOVE THEM. Definitely a good set of selections in the store this year. I personally like the things that we can make use of, and these highlighters will be VERY useful this school year!

I would be interested in hearing more Summer Game data- the ratio of adult to child players, how much circulation increased, how many new library cards were issued, etc. Can the public access that information anywhere?

Sara, I'm working on a report for the Library Board about Summer Game statistics. We'll post it here when it's done. Thanks for asking!

And Kaydence, we are looking into your order. Don't worry, we'll get it sorted out.

If anybody takes up the challenge to learn the zither, there were a bunch of lovely antique ones for sale at the PTO Thrift Shop last week. Granted, as antiques they were quite pricey, so ithey might not be the best choice for a TRUE BEGINNER, but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for the mystery prize updates! I was curious if they would be previous summer game items like the tote that was being offered.

The summer game is sadly over this year but next year you can keep playing it and do online badges of 2014!! Awesome right! I will miss the game. It was tons of fun! Thank You AADL!!!

I Can't believe everybody earned so much!!! You did great AADL and all the players!!!
