I'm a Garfield fan. I admit it. Thank you for reminding me that I have to find a way to convince my parents to let me check out the recent books :D Garfield is the funniest! Thanks for making a Garfield Badge!

Yay! New badges! im excited to see the geocaching one and the park explorer one! I might order the chocolate;not sure yet.....

My son left for sleep away camp yesterday. Luckily he left me his user name and password because he never would have forgiven me if he didn't get the chocolate. He worked hard to build up points in hopes of having enough, and he did!

There seems to be something missing on the Jump In badge...namely the clue for, or in fact anything at all about, the second code. Very puzzling.

Also, I can't seem to find the first code in the Hollywood (Lights! Camera! Action!) badge at all, though I'm fairly certain I have looked at the right materials. Am I wrong?

Edited to add: I'm sure there are problems for both of these and it's not just me because both of these badges have been earned by 0 people as of 10 pm.

@cherylo, sara & Bookbird, you were *right*! Thank you for the heads-up. There was something wonky with L!C!A!, but it appears to be fixed and working as intended now. I just went through and checked the Lights! Camera! Action! badge myself, just to be extra sure. ; )

Can someone help me with the last code of the Totoro badge?
I'm pretty sure I have the right person E*** F******, or is it the other person, but I've tried both people and still can't find the code.

I have the same problem. I tried both people but not working
I agree on the Jump badge thing
there is also the movie person bio. there's only one book that fits the description, but no code

@gxl, I got the last Totoro code...I think you have the right person, but I'm wondering if it's a catalog or search problem. I looked up the film it must be in IMDB and then searched directly for it. Maybe try finding out what you're searching for from an outside source if possible then being more direct?

Is there a problem with the LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! Badge? I'm pretty sure I found a book by the correct person, but there was no code.

Thank you for the Totoro hint, it was making me crazy. I've been having the same problem with the two badges everyone's talking about. Now I know to stop wasting my time and maybe actually get some sleep!

I got the dark chocolate last year and it wasn't as good as I'd expected, so I'll leave it for others this year. On the other hand, my husband adores lobster butter love coffee, so I hope I hit that one before it's all gone!

Hi all,

The clue for the Totoro badge has been fixed - it was in the book but the clue said the movie. Also the JUMP badge was missing the clue - should be able to see it now if you click back on it and then you will definitely find the code. Thanks for keeping us on our toes =>

There is no code in the final Shirley Temple badge clue. There is only one 1935 movie starring that man.

Could there be a problem with the last Totoro clue? There were two English voicers, CC and EF. I looked at every movie either was in , and found no code.

In reply to by sara

now I have everything from this badge drop except for Geocatche and park badge....
Who noticed that the parks were mainly in the north?

So glad to see the coffee again for this year's Summer Game. Local ROOS's Lobster Butter Love is super delicious!

Does anyone know if there are there going to be more wild kingdom badges? There have not been any new ones since the third badge drop

I see players getting points from something called Filled an Order, can someone tell me what that is?

I can't get the first code for the "Jump In" badge. I don't see anything on the far right column about lexile when I click on "story times and events". What am I missing? Please help!

@wulfflynn: Thanks for the advice. Sadly, my computer won't load the AADL search page (it is a VERY old computer... I REALLY need a newer one - you know what I mean, @ZackTheCardShark? :D) so that won't work for me. Does anyone have any help for me that doesn't involve the search page, or should I just wait till I can get to the library and use one of those computers? Thanks anyway, though, @wulfflynn.

Hi all -- glad you can find the info using google, but the goal with the jump badges is to get everyone to click around on jump.aadl.org to find stuff. Try searching under "Recommended Stuff" and then seeing what is under the various lists there. Lexile information is gonna be under there.

Hmm. I rarely post comments on AADL, mainly because I rarely have anything to comment about, but with this comment I am 70% of the way toward the first "comment master" badge.

@mwallagm - I can't wait to tackle the hockey badge, either! 58 days til hockey season!! :)

On another note, is there something wonky with the geocaching badge? If I click on it, it says I received it, but I don't see it in my badges on my player page nor do I see the bonus in my scorecard.

I'm behind in badges as I've been doing other things - namely word puzzles and logic puzzles, so I need to get busy this week!

I've noticed that sometimes the system needs the trigger of you scoring other points to award something like a new badge that you already have the points for, or one of the contributor badges, once they go live in the system, @vlong.

@cherylo - Yeah, I forgot about that. This year, I've been online when a lot of the badges have come out (tagging, reviewing, etc.) and they've been awarded almost right away. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Having some difficulty with the "My Neighbor Totoro" badge.

Careful study of the clue led me immediately to the conclusion that the key witness must be the next door neighbor of some Japanese chap by the name of Hiyao Miyazaki. Drat. Japan again. I don't know why more of these quests can't be closer to home. The Furstenberg Park quest was no problem at all, but flights to Japan are expensive. I rang up my travel agent, and asked her to put me on the first flight to Japan, preferably a flying boat this time. As usual, she claims there are no flying boats flying the Pacific anymore. Absurd. I tell her that I know she is lying, and that if I am killed when my airliner makes a forced landing in the Pacific it will be her fault. She asks me why I don't buy my tickets over the Internet like everyone else. Bah! Internet! That old myth surfaces again.

I start packing. Fedora and bullwhip, or pith helmet and elephant gun? I go for the fedora. But if I keep being sent to Japan, I'm going to have to invest in some proper oriental robes and grow a Fu Manchu mustache.

A long flight. Many passengers have little glowing boxes with buttons. I avert my eyes.

In Tokyo, I meet my first hitch. I go looking for a telephone directory so I can look up the address of this Miyazaki gentleman, but there don't seem to be any telephone directories. Glowing screens everywhere, but not a phone book in sight. Obviously someone has hidden them in hopes of thwarting my quest. Probably that darned Cherylo again, here ahead of me once more. I am reduced to asking random people on the street, in hopes that someone might speak English. "Excuse me, do you know Hiyao Miyazaki?" Miraculously, the first person I ask speaks English and seems to know the man. "Studio Ghibli" he says. "Koganei." Great! "Do you know where I can get a horse?" I ask him. Instead of answering he pulls one of those little glowing boxes out of his pocket and starts poking at it. My Golly! Even in Japan!

I start to leave, but he comes running after me, trying to thrust the glowing box in my face. I pull my hat over my eyes. "Mr Cowboy," he says, "this is where you can get a horse!" I ask where, and he gives me the address. I brought a map with me. It will be a long walk.

As I walk, people keep shouting "Indiana Jones" at me. I say, "No, Michigan!" to the first few, and then give it up, Indiana, Michigan, it's probably all the same to the Japanese.

Eventually, I get myself a horse and set out for Koganei. Policemen immediately try to stop me. This always happens. Luckily I have learned a trick for this. Once in London a constable who stopped me asked me where the film crew was. I had no idea what that meant, but I found that if I said they would be here momentarily, the constabulary would leave me alone. So I told the Japanese policeman that the film crew would be here momentarily and he let me go.

After just a few hours, I arrived at Studio Ghibli. By this time I was being followed by hundreds of people on bicycles. I tried to ignore them, but they were making the horse nervous. But I didn't need Studio Ghibli. I needed their next door neighbors, which turned out to be a noodle shop. I tied up my horse to a street sign, and went in. An elderly Asian man is there. Obviously a wise oriental sage. "Honorable sir, I need help finding soot sprites, or a youth book about them!" He suggests that I might want the people next door, but I say no. "Why do you want this?" he asks. "For the Ann Arbor District Library Summer Game" I say. "Ah," he says, "you buy some noodles, and I'll go into the back room and consult the iPad." I am momentarily confused, then I understand. "Oh, you mean the 'I Ching!'" "If you say so," he says. He disappears into the back room, and I eat noodles for a while. They are very good noodles.

After a while the ancient scholar comes out and says, "I have discovered your game code." And he gives it to me. Victory!

But when I come out, my nervous horse has made a very large mess on the sidewalk, and there are some very angry policemen who arrest me in spite of the fact that the film crew will arrive momentarily. Now I am being held in custody.

Could someone please help me by wiring me 5,000 yen for bail?

@erin: Thank you so mcuh! My problem was, I was looking under the button for the second code, thinking the hint was for the first code. Thanks again!
@Jan Wolter: I'm loving your comments! More, more! How do you do it? :-)

*laughing a lot, trying to stop*
Soon long and soooo funny! Your comment was amazing Jan!
I recently won a bet with my dad and can send some money over if you could tell me how:)

Coffee and Choc. great stuff and a perfect way to start any day. Wait maybe i should save my points in case the coffee is different in the other set, oh no, not indecision. AHH.

Many thanks to those who wired me bail money. Things are unexpectedly expensive in Japan - almost two dollars for a bottle of Coca Cola that ought to cost a dime, and the price to rent a horse even in so cosmopolitan a place as downtown Tokyo was staggering. That vital bowl of noodles had used up the last of my funds.

While I was waiting to be released, I started to study the next clue. It seemed simple enough. I just needed a word translated to Japanese. The fellow slouching in the next cell didn't look very Japanese, but it never hurts to ask. "Excuse me sir," I said. "Could you kindly tell me the Japanese word for a dwarf or tiny totoro?" The man said, in a rather surly voice, "Yo' mama!" "Thank you kindly for you assistance," I said.

When I finally got out on the street again, I went up to the first young Japanese fellow that I saw, a man with sunglasses and an orange jacket, and asked him, "I have a great desire for 'yo mama.' Could you kindly assist me?" The young man said some angry Japanese words and made as if to strike me, but I have nimble feet and fled quickly. I suppose every nation has it's share of rude fellows.

After I had done sufficient running, I found myself near a playground. There was a little girl on a swing set who I thought would probably not hit very hard, so I decided to ask her. I waited till she was done swinging, and then asked her, "where is 'yo mama'?" She pointed silently to an older woman sitting on a bench nearby, so I went over to the older woman. At last!

I went over to the woman and told her that I was looking for a youth book to learn how to draw other kawaii characters in miniature. She seemed confused by this, although I knew for a fact that 48 other people had already completed this quest, so she must be used to being asked about this by now. Well, I suppose she must play out her role which apparently required her to pretend not to speak English. So I explained very slowly and clearly all about the Ann Arbor Summer Game. She interrupted once to yell in Japanese at the little girl who had followed me over from the swing set. I assume she was telling the girl to stop poking at one of those little glowing box things that seem to be such a fad. But apparently I passed some sort of test, because the old woman and the girl talked some more in Japanese, and then the girl told me the game code.

So that seems to be the secret - avoid the man with the orange jacket, talk instead to the old woman in the park. It looks like for my next quest I need to get an art book from Mr. Miyazaki's neighbor, the noodle shop sage. That should be easy.

I'm having trouble with the first code for the <strong>Bluth Bonanza</strong> badge. Is the guy's name something along the lines of "B------ B----?"

Thank you for making the chocolate prize available. I've already ordered it!
I'm wondering, though, why there are five cats badges, but only four dog ones. Will this be corrected?

@Jen Chapin-Smith: Well, I don't think there is really anything to "correct." The various badge series sometimes have different amount of badges in different ones. For instance, for the "KAWAII! SQUEE!" badges and for the "Shirley Temple, Curly Girl" badges, there have been one pretty much every badge drop, while the "Wild Kingdom" series has only three badges. So, as a far as I know, there is no reason the cat badges should necessarily have the same number of badges all the time.

@Jan Wolter: Hahaha! Keep up the good work!

there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm for chocolate and coffe on this post.
@ Jan Wolter (can I call you JW?) Amazing! I will copy and paste your quest comments onto a separate sheet that I can laugh over later. If you need help on the badge, why not seek out Detective Conan? He looks like a little kid, but is really a teen who had taken a prototype poison that shrank his body. You will find him at the Mouri Detective Agency, but ask for Edogawa Conan instead of Detective Conan. Conan speaks English and may help you!

So I headed back to the noodle shop next to Studio Ghibli. The sage was still behind the counter, so I asked him if he had the art book. "If you buy more noodles," he says, "I'll do another search on the iPad for you."

"You mean 'I Ching'", I said. "I fear I have exhausted my funds. I can't afford to buy any more noodles."

"No noodles, no web search," says the sage.

"I'll trade you my fedora," I say.

"Out!" he says, pointing at the door.

Dejected, I slouch my way toward the door. And then I see something poking out of the trash can next to the door. Could it be? Yes! It's a art book! I grab it and run.

A block away, I sit down on a bench to examine my find. It's a rather torn up and a bit dirty, but as I thumb through it, I see that every page is covered with black and white art drawings, usually many drawings in little boxes on each page, with lots of Japanese writing mixed in. I look back at the brown cover. It has a picture of a little Japanese boy with big glasses and a lot of Japanese writing, but there is a little dot on the cover with the English words "Detective Conan" written in it.

This is always the hardest part for me, where I always seem to need to get help. The clue says I'm supposed to find my code in the book. But most books have thousands of words in them. How am I supposed to tell which are the game code? This book is worse than most. The words in it are all written in Japanese characters, but I know the code should use the English alphabet. I paged through the book more carefully, looking for something that well leap out at me as an obvious game code. And then I found it. A page is missing, torn completely out of the book! Mercy! The noodle shop sage must have given this book to some previous questor who had the price of a bowl of noodles. The questor found the page with the game code, tore it out, and threw the rest of the book in the trash. My copy was useless!

My despair knew no bounds. What could I do? I stared at the cover of the book, and an ideal crystallized in the right front hemisphere of my brain. Detective Conan! I must find this person. Surely he could tell me what was on the missing page!

But how am I to find him in this city without telephone directories? Once more I must trust to the kindness of strangers. I stopped a young man who was walking by. "Excuse me, can you help me?" I ask. "No English," he says. I show him the cover of the book. "Detective Conan," I say. "Ah," he says. "Detective Conan at Big Sight!"

I'm confused, but he grabs my map, unfolds it, and points to a spot by the bay. It is labeled "Big Sight Convention Center". "Thank you!" I say.

So I start walking. Too bad I lost my horse. It's a long walk, but eventually I arrive at a building like a mushroom made of triangles, and there is a big picture of the boy with the glasses on a sign hanging above the entrance way. The sign says "Case Closed 81 - Release Party," whatever that means. And there, standing in front is the very boy, the splitting image of the one on my art book. But then something strange happens. There is another one. And another. And another. At least half the people in the crowd are little boys with glasses, some bigger, some smaller, but all dressed alike with the same glasses as on the book. Very odd, but I only need one.

As I approach everyone starts shouting "Indiana Jones, Indian Jones" again. Some crowd around and want to stand next to me while friends flash lights at us from some of those awful glowing boxes.

I slip away and find a glasses boy, one almost man-sized, all alone. I tell him about the library quest and the game code, and the missing page, but he just starts playing with a glowing box. I leave him and ask another glasses boy. I think this one might really be a girl. She doesn't seem to speak English at all. But then the first glasses boy I talked to taps me on the shoulder and gives me the game code. I give him a big hug and thank him profusely. Another stage of my quest is behind me.

Hi Jen!
I've been alternating which (cat or dog) badges are released every other week. So, if there are more cat badges, then that means the next one to be released will be a dog badge, and vice versa. At the end of the game, there should be an even number in each series!

For the last code of the totoro badge, I found the two possible actors and I'm looking through books that their movies have been based on, but I haven't found the code yet. I also read through the comments here. Can someone give me an extra hint?

@SBNB & LMD3577

For the last part of the Totoro badge. You're looking for the actress in the Disney version. Then I highly suggest doing one of two things.

1) Look through the young lady's filmography list on IMDB and look for a title that you think might be appropriate to look for as a book.
2) Do a keyword search with her full name in video and scroll through the list of movies until you find one you think might be right and then search for that book.

For me personally, the title to use stood out to me more when I was looking at the IMDB list than when I just did the keyword search, but it IS present in the keyword search so if that works better for you, great!

Hope that helps. :)

I think there is a problem with the badge: Jump In!. It doesn't say there is a second hint.....

@ estermyer -- did you submit the first clue for the JUMP IN badge? If you did the clue for the 2nd code will come up with the first code is redeemed.

Re: the TOTORO badge. If you have figured out the actress who did the voice - are you looking at all of her movies on imdb.com? If you search her movies in the aadl.org catalog you can figure out if there's a book and a movie. But here's a clue - it's a book and a movie about a beloved DOG.

@JW
YAY! you fitted Edogawa Conan into your story! yay! I am thinking about doing a badge with codes hidden in various Case Closed books next year.... That or another CLAMP badge.
Now you might want to try asking Earl Ciel Phantomhive and his butler Sebastian Michaelis. Their story takes place in England, so they should know some English. The Japanese name is Kuroshitsuji, or Black Butler.
*going off to celebrate*

"Find a cat who makes tasty noodles," it said.

Well, that was a day wasted. Do you know how many cats there are in Tokyo? Well, I can tell you, if you put them in a kitchen, even with the pot already on the stove and already boiling, none of them, NONE OF THEM, make tasty noodles.

OK, one cat made noodles, but they were awful. Seriously, seriously undercooked.

Then I looked back at the clue again, and it says "Find a NOVEL ABOUT a cat who makes tasty noodles."

Dang. That's a whole lot easier. I gotta remember to read these clues more carefully.

Now what am I going to do with all these cats?

AADL Staff:
Could you please let us know the size of the chocolate prize in ounces? (or dimensions, I guess)

To all the summer gamers out there,
I am working on the Totoro badge and I am having trouble finding the last clue word. I looked on IMDB and there are two anwsers to choose from are we looking for the name of the actress from the Disney version or mainstream English version of the movie because I have looked up both actress that did the voices in both versions and there is no clue word to be found. I am hoping someone has a clue on where to find the anwser.
Thanks so much for the help,
Lmd3577

To all the summer gamers out there,
I am working on the "Bluth Bonanza" badge and I am having trouble looking for the fifth codeword for the badge. I know the metal band they are looking for but I am having trouble looking for the title. I have Wiked up the info to to no help. I am hoping some of you gamers out there can give me another clue on to where find the codeword.
Thanks so much for the help,
lmd3577

Fellow players,

I'm having difficulty with the last code for the "Bluth Bonanza" badge. I found the answer to fill in the blank, thanks to Google, but I can't seem to find a code in anything that comes up when I search for that term. But if I break the term down and search for each individual word, there's just too many items to go through. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

@vlong - Do a KEYWORD search in the catalog of EVERYTHING with the two words you found b***** s**** -- You should get only 8 results. The code is in one of them.

Hope that helps...

Ahhhh! Okay, I see what the problem was. I was confused because that specific one doesn't say "Summer Game 2013" and I remember that particular author/artist being a clue in a previous year so I thought the code there was from the previous year.

Thanks everyone for the help. :)

Just wondering, what happened to the weekly chat threads? They are clearly not being posted any more. Why not?

To all the summer gamers out there,
I am working on the "Lights, Cameras, Action" badge right now and I am having trouble finding the third code word for the badge. I know one of the four people the clue is about. I have looked on IMDB for the answer but I still am having trouble. I know I am looking for one of three brothers or one actor who is also from near by and that is where the problems come in I have searched all 4 to no avail so I am hoping some of you gamers out there can give me some more clues on where to look for the clue word.
Thanks so much for the help,
lmd3577

@bookbird
That is actually the clue for the first clue word. For the third clue word I know I am looking for eighter one of three brothers in the movie industry or one other actor who is also from the area. I have IMDBed the four answers that I know of and none of them fit the third code word so that is where I need help. And I also know I am looking for a video doctemry so I just need one more clue to find it.
Thanks so much for the help
lmd3577

While I have no idea on what you mean by clue word, I know that the documentary is about someone named R**** C*****.
I don't think I can view the hints if I already got the code, if that's what you mean by clue word.

Thrilled to get the chocolate! :-)

Has there been any announcement about what happens if we completed streets quest entirely before summer game started? I thought there was supposed to be a bonus for that?

Also, what is to become of our remaining secret shop tokens? I'm still waiting for that announcement.

Please won't someone who has ordered the chocolate prize tell the rest of us how big it is?! It looks like a little square of chocolate for a lot of points.

wondering if anyone had problems finding the answer to code 5 of Bandemer park badge? we found many benches but no stickers
any hints?

@mengland; That particular one gave me some trouble too. The stickers are on the bench supports at about shin level, facing away from the water, one on each support of the bench in question. They're not in pristine shape.

Same thing happened to my son. I emailed Eli and he said there was some kind of mix up and the code wasn't put with the chocolate, but they will send everyone who got it an email with the code next week.

Zekicmom, Thank you for answering what happened to the chocolate badge codes. I picked mine up and was wondering about the code.
Thanks again.

Thanks cherylo for the help. I'll go back and look again.
It sure would be nice if there were hints for the park badges. (Summer game staff Can we have hints for the park badges, please?)

I think there are no hints for the park badges because they are supposed to be easy to find, I guess. For the furnstenburg badge everything was where it should be, unless you wanted more exact directions.

I'm stuck on a few of the badges from this drop. I'm hoping somebody has some help for me:

1. The first "Bluth Bonanza" code. I think I know the youngest Bluth's first name - B****r? - but I can't figure out the singer-songwriter.
2. The first "Hockey In The D" code. Searching what I thought was the correct team, I came up with both the third and the fifth codes from that badge, but not the first one.
3. The second "Don't Mess With Mars" code. I just can't figure out what units I'm looking for."

Please help me!

@mengland and @vlong: Thanks you for the help! I earned two of the three badges. For the "Bluth Bonanza," though, I'm still stuck. I found the G****** M******, and it is two names, as it said in the badge hint, but when I search the name in the catalog, I get waaaaay too many results. How can I narrow it down? Thanks again!

@yaldah - you obviously have the right name, so now just search it under the categories from the clue. For a singer /songwriter you would search the name under author and music. It won't be the first thing that pops up, but I believe it's in the first item of the group this person was in at one point. Hope that helps!

@yaldah - the way I remember getting the next code was looking on wikipedia and reading about the character. There I found the name of the song he used and just searched the catalog for a Blu-ray with that title. I used Wikipedia a lot for that badge.

YES!!!! I found the code, and I just earned the badge! Finally! :-) Thank you so much, everyone, for all the help with the Bluth badge.
@Bookbird, thanks for the tip that the code was actually in the book. I think Zekicmom's hint was meant for the fifth clue, actually. Again, thank you to all you Summer Gamers for helping me!

@yaldah

On the "Hockey in the D" badge - there are 6 original teams in the NHL, Detroit is one. You're looking for one of the other 6 - specifically one that might be north of us in some way. If you're looking for the correct team, you should find the code within the first few items on the search.

For the "Don't Mess With Mars" badge, try googling something along the lines of failed missions to Mars with the date that's provided in the clue (the date for the landing, not take-off). You should come up with a wikipedia article that will give you the answer you're searching for. It's not something that necessarily stands out in the article, so you might have to read it carefully, but the answer *is* there.

Hope that helps!

I think the JUMP badges are a great way to learn all about the JUMP website and all the great resources the library has to offer!

I just got the code for the dark chocolate. I'm curious if I ordered the milk chocolate, if I'll get an entirely different badge?

Also, I got the Roos Roast prize and was happy to find out they graciously will grind it for you! Woohoo for those with no burr grinder.

The chocolate looks good and love the printed image. Thanks to AADL friends for all these wonderful prizes.

We found the geocache tonight. What a great addition to Summer Game! For anyone still working on that, the actual location was not as far north as our map indicated, and you don't need to do the kind of bushwhacking we did before we found it. Make sure you park in the parking lot, as there is no parking in the area where the cache is located.

**YES!!!!!!!!** With this comment, I earn the Supreme Comment Master badge... just in time, too, since SG is almost over :-(

I'm still having a lot of trouble with the Bluth Bonanza badge. I can't understand the second clue. Could anyone help me out?

We have gotten the chocolate from a past Summer Game and it was some of the most delicious chocolate ever. Thanks for bringing it back!

For anyone trying to complete the Totoro badge -- the Wikipedia article recommended in the hint does not use the Japanese name of a tiny totoro; maybe it did last year. I recommend searching for it elsewhere. A google search worked for me.
