Streets Quest #8: Honest Toil and Motor Oil
by andrewjmac
Springtime! A time to take care of all those things you've been putting off over the long winter holidays. Like getting that old junker tuned up, getting some crops in the ground, and GETTING QUESTING! Now that the snow has melted (at least, as of this writing, who knows what's on the ground when you actually read this), it's the perfect weather to trek out to some panels and do some Glass Gazing. Online Onlooking and Old Newsmakering are a bit more appropriate for winter, so a lot of you have kept up with those. We're venturing a little further afield this time, so put on your galoshes and prepare to go as far as a few blocks away:
Climb up the courthouse and look out northeast,
See there's nothing this town is short of;
Get some marble, some gas, an Italian feast,
Even tools in what's circled above.

Can anyone give me hint for
Can anyone give me hint for the old newsmaker clue 1? I thought I had it but it doesn't accept anything I enter.
Make sure you include the
Make sure you include the final word of the phrase (the one from the riddle) in your answer.
@SarahRose: I have been doing
@SarahRose: I have been doing that. Tried it as two words or just one. It doesn't work.
I think what SarahRose hint
I think what SarahRose hint means is the answer could be broken up into three words.
It must be a simple answer to
It must be a simple answer to clue#1 as six people have already got the Old Newsmaker badge. SarahRose, mengland, any one else: is there an ad, a photo, or an article that gives the answer need? What I thought was obvious answer doesn't seem to work.
For GG7 clue#2, the place has space available notice on one side. Is it the same building??
@rimpopu, for ON #1, you have
@rimpopu, for ON #1, you have to include the noun as well as the adjective in the code phrase. "...what kind of WALKS?" is the question being asked.
As for last month's GG (set 7), second code, it's the name of the business now occupying that location. I'm not sure about the 'space available' notice bit. Maybe make sure you have the right building?
no, i'm talking about this
no, i'm talking about this month's GG2. Ag hall's new appellation means its new name right?
as for last month, I got lucky on the exact phrase for the third code, and a downtown visit for the fourth code. now I need the fifth, but from google maps, the name above IS first national building, but i got a code not recognized message
@Bookbird, my mention of GG7
@Bookbird, my mention of GG7 was in regard to @rimpopu's question. Yes, you have the right idea for this month's glass gazing.
For Old News #1 there is an
For Old News #1 there is an article (or rather an ad) that mention's the man in question and what his firm constructs.
GG2: Ag hall's new name?
GG2: Ag hall's new name?
Just getting a start today,
Just getting a start today, but I see several people are already done with this set. So, those finished, for OO#2, I am stumped. I see the name of the person in question on the panel. On that same panel, I see what that person sold in that space. I enter it. I enter combinations. I enter one word. The other. Two words. Three words. The generic term for these items. Nothing works. Is there some trick I'm missing for entering OO#2's code? Is the code directly in the panel text or must I interpret a little?
EDIT: post and solve! I was looking at the wrong part of the panel. The name in question appears in more than one place on the panel. Questers, please note that the "hints" which we've all come to ignore, actually do help. Some say "read closely"; some say "look closely". There can be a difference.
for GG8 #2, davis block,
for GG8 #2, davis block, agricultural hall, ann arbor observer, ann arbor farmer's market don't work. must be an obscure name found only by visiting the site.....
@Bookbird, none of those are
@Bookbird, none of those are the current name of building, though some name businesses in or near the building.
Finally found the answer to
Finally found the answer to GG8ON clue1. Phew! Thank you everyone who wrote hints. Now marching onwards...slowly :)
aadl staff: is the first
aadl staff: is the first code for glass gazing on Q8 broken? I've tried what I think is the correct name (and I have been to the site and read it directly) two different times but it doesn't seem to work. I know others got this already, but has it broken or do I have the wrong name?
@pk did you notice the middle
@pk did you notice the middle initial?
Yes, I did note that. Even
Yes, I did note that. Even tried with and without a dot in case they changed the "no punctuation" rule. With and without spaces, too, in case that changed. I feel fairly confident I have the right object, place, name (it was easy to read, and the object easy to spot) and have checked my spelling several times. Thus, I'm wondering if something's broken. Anyone else trying the GG having trouble with #1?
Still confused about SQ8,
Still confused about SQ8, GG1. Is the code working? Those who have already gotten it, can you just re-enter it and see if it says "code not recognized" or "you already got this one"? I can't figure out if I have the wrong code or if it's broken. I'll never finish this quest (8) before 9 comes out, but I hope I can at least make a dent in it. Help, anyone?
@pk: I tested it for you. It
@pk: I tested it for you. It says already entered. It has first name, middle initial, last name. No periods. Hope it helps. I know it can be frustrating. I am stuck on old news#2 and GG#2. I am not going anywhere with either :(
@rimpopu : Thanks. Guess I
@rimpopu : Thanks. Guess I have to go back to the site and see what my mistake has been all this time. Argh.
Old News #2 : Do you know the search engine trick of putting quotes around entire phrases to be sure you don't get a hit on just one word of that phrase? I used quotes around phrases and the code was in the first item in the search results. It's all about the right search terms, phrased correctly. That item may come up in a search without quotes, but it was so far down I didn't find it when I tried without quotes. Good luck!
Obviously I can't help with GG 2 since I'm stuck on GG1
-- edit: I got gg1 at last. Thanks for the clue that the code was not broken. Seems that this artist's name is spelled two different ways in different places online. One way has "r" as the 3rd letter, the other does not. I think I got confused when I was at the site (or did I?) by things I'd read online. Spelling it the other way worked fine.
I wish I knew more about
I wish I knew more about Quest
I hoping someone can help. I
I hoping someone can help. I went to the old Arg. building for GG code#2 and I still have no idea what the new sign or what is the new name of the building. Does anyone have any hints they can give me?
