Looks good, huh? So get cracking! But to help you in your cracking, based on your feedback, we've continued to add features to the badge close-up page, and as many of you may have noticed, you can now see how many of the needed codes you've got on each badge, and even click to see hints for the codes you don't have yet! Hopefully this will help players know where they are in their badge quests, let us know what you think!

So in just a few days is the opening of the Summer Game Shop, with new items, new mysteries, and all your Summer Game points available to spend! Remember, only summer game points are spendable in the Summer Game Shop. Points-o-matic points aren't Summer Game points! But no worries, they will come into play later.

One more note; if you like codes, points, and badges, DO NOT MISS KIDS READ COMICS next weekend at the downtown library! Starting off with famous Voice Actor Neil Kaplan Friday night, KRC will be so loaded with codes, points, and badges, serious summer game players won't want to miss this very special event! Stay tuned for more details, keep those points coming, and check back around dinnertime Monday for the grand reopening of the SUMMER GAME SHOP!

Hooray for new badges! (And odd timezones!)

I'm in Hawaii, which is how I can explain my being up <: It's only 6:30 here.

And I did the manga one all off the top of my head ;D (One of them is Korean, though, so it really isn't fair to say they're all manga. Korean graphic novels are manhwa.)

As always, loving the search for new badges and staying up WAY too late to look (especially since I have to work in the morning). But, the hint about the next planet over from Saturn was not particularly helpful in the manga badge - at least for me. The rest I got fairly quickly but that one had me stumped and the hint was not particularly helpful. After using Wikipedia and Google and searching for all sorts of variations on the planets around Saturn, I'll admit, I had to finally look at another player's scoreboard for help. Maybe the hint could be modified a bit to point someone who has very little knowledge of manga in the right direction? :)

Good Morning, Love the hints but one Hillary hint is still not working on my computer. Of course it's the last one I need to finish the badge.
I know I'm thinking to hard but someone a hint about the second part of the badge. best of.....what?

I think I have the right droopy cartoon, but there's no game code.
Edit: Never mind, I found it. I didn't know it would be in the Additional Details.

Where in the world is the game code for the "Nutter" collaboration? I'm pretty sure I have it, but I can't find the code.

(cherylo, you made the badge design?)

Edit: *sigh* I found the code (I was looking at the book on CD, not the actual book). The post-and-solve method works again...

Morgush, yeah I made a badge design. I'm working on a few more too. ::huge grin:: designing them takes a little more time and work than achieving them. You could try making one if you really are bored enough. I wish I had more time to work on my designs; I've got several mostly figured out, but I need uninterrupted time to finish and polish them for submission.

I designed the badge quest by deciding the theme, researching in the catalog, typing out the name, description, clue texts, codes, alternate clue text (the text that would show up if you looked at the full score card of another player who has already entered a particular code), a general idea for the badge image, and submitted it to the library summer game team. They liked my design, did the coding in the catalog and summer game databases, actually created the badge image, and any other stuff to make it real, et voila.

What I don't know but assume is that the alternate text was also used for the hint system, since I didn't check, and I did not know about the hint system upgrade being rolled out.

Spending the time to design a badge really showed me just how much work and passion get poured into the summer game, and I appreciate it all the more. It really teaches useful research skills and creative and structural thinking. AND I end up finding materials I did not know about that I want to listen to, watch, and read. A lot of them. My library stuff shelf is always too full in the summer and so is my wishlist. :-)

Eli, Andrew and other summer game staff... are other libraries doing something similar? Did you model the game from another one? Especially if this is your creation, are other libraries interested in, or doing domething similar?

PS typing this on my phone was hard. I am on vacation and the hotel I am at is currently without Internet due to storms. (I'm in WV right now.)

Ugh! I can't find the codes for the Hillary Texts badge.
What does it mean when it says ,"Hillary may or may not have kept this secretary of state’s sunglasses - find a code in a book about her." Her as in Hillary, or the secretary of State?
And what does "And when Ryan calls his girl Hillary always answers - and you find a code!" mean?
Edit: I found it.

Uh... Who is IOI-#655321? Seriously? Use the username of a Sixer? Whose username IS that, anyway?

Morgsush- her as in the other secretary of state.

And if it's sad that you've read all but one of the manga, then it's definitely sad that I've read every single one. (And who knows how many others besides :"D )

Zhengyang1022, I now know who you are. :)
Grace Li told me. You know, the person who always says you're cute (haha)?

Looks like all of you have a good start on the badges, congratulations! Wish I had that much time. Anyone notice that IOI-#655321 is in 6th place, just like RPO? Why the Sux0rs name anyways?

Re: Bookbird
That's slightly creepy, how it's exactly in 6th place just like in the book. Though, I don't think that was intentional...
I wondered why they chose that nickname too.

Re: Bookbird
Umm... Isn't there an edit button? It's right under your comment.

Think of "better eat your _____ and veggies". Then think of a synonym for "crate". (Hint: The manga is about the Chinese zodiac animals.)

Oh... Well for the edit, I was on this page 1/2 hour ago, about, and saw a 'two new comments' thing, whatever you call it. I looked and saw a red new by a comment of yours, ABOVE some other comments. Maybe there was a glitch.

Thanks for the (Hint) That REALLY helped.

For the manga mangler badge, the hint should be "the next planet over from Jupiter", not Saturn. that messed me up for a while.

Another day missed, another 77 new comments to read through. Tappan. Thanks for the hints everyone. If my computer time continues to be as is, look for me near the bottom the leaderboard.

There's nothing wrong with that. I was just wondering what the word "Tappen" was doing between two sentences about comments and hints.
Oh, if you go to Tappen, does that mean you know Zhengyang1022?

Most likely not, since I don't really make an effort to get to know people unless they are in my group, or read a lot like me. I actually read so much that one day, a girl came up to me and said that she recognized me from elementary school "Your the girl that reads during recess" I quote. I also don't ask people in school about if they have a Summer Game account/username/if they participate. Is Zhengyang1022 in orch, choir, or Mrs. Wright's class?

In my ninth grade English class, our teacher had us record all the books we read on large pieces of paper, which she hung around the classroom walls, and I had people ask me if I was "the person who read all the books in that English class" once they knew what my name was. (My teacher let us record manga, too, which meant I had even more books to my name than I might have otherwise.)

Re: eli
Few weeks until the Secret Shop opens? Can't wait! :)

I heard you hinting about somewhere you could spend Points-o-matic points (something about them coming into play later)... Maybe I was mistaken?

Ok..... You know I can read the things you type.
I do academic games, go to Tappan Middle School(TMS) and am in orch. (I'm going to 7th grade)I know, I'm really dumb about telling everyone who reads this my identity, but, whatever.

Really? You? Never though it was possible, because of your gigantic amount of points, and how you seemed to have advice for how to earn badges the moment someone asks and you see it before others

Any advice about the first and last Hillary codes would be appreciated. They're driving me crazy!

I can't find the final Fish Tank code. I thought that I had the abundant plant, but I looked through all the books that came up twice and I couldn't find it. Can someone help me?

What do you think is the hardest type of badge? (Like Local History Buff)

The Hillary badge. Grrr.... hoping "post and solve" works now because I've been banging my head against the keyboard on this one. I believe the sunglasses one should be easy. Only two choices, one more likely than the other, yes? I feel I've looked at every *&#$ material aadl has in the catalog on both these talented ladies and yet I find no game code. Am I looking for a game code in the usual "gamecode" spot or am I looking for something else? Am I to be looking in the catalog? Anyone with a small hint? I like to solve these with a bare minimum of hints, but I can't figure out where to go next on this one...

pk on Sun: It is in the normal gamecode spot and it's in the catalog. I think that there are enough hints. Look closely at the gender, and then look at a list of all the secretaries of state. There aren't that many that qualify.

The only thing I won was one of the small silver equations trophies and a ling triangle thingy. (We got second in eq and won our division in ling)
I hope they don't delete this comment.

Hey guys, thanks for all your comments! We're thrilled to see the community building here... but let's keep the conversation on-topic. That means talking about the summer game and badges and such. And please don't talk about online vs. offline identities unless it's your own, that's just good online manners.

And cherylo, thanks so much for your badge, we can't wait to see what else you come up with! To answer your questions, we developed the Summer Game here at AADL! We share the code that runs it for any other library to use for free, and we are always happy to answer questions from other libraries, but there's nothing else out there quite like this!

Thanks, Eli, for reminding us all to stay on topic and in good manners.

Thanks to you, cherylo, for the badge - that was fun to solve! I appreciate how hard you all work to make the badges since I don't think I could manage to make anything this great.

The new features are wonderful (even if some of the hints are bit too obvious). Especially appreciate being able to see exactly how many more things I need to figure out to get a badge. Makes it way easier to track.

I showed this thread to my sister and she knew who all you Clague people are. (This comment is totally not creepy at all.)

Also, doing AG is awesome. My sisters are both lame, and refused to do it, even though I told them they should. AG can actually be (somewhat) helpful in high school. (Not very much, but a little bit.) Ling can definitely help you become a future Grammar Nazi.

Maybe I'll try my hand at making a badge. It sounds like it could be quite interesting c: (Now to just pick a topic for it...)

thanks for the confirmation, alumeng.ajl I did finally get it. For anyone else stuck on the Hilary badge, sunglasses code here's another hint. Nickname. If you use the full name (edit: a mis-spelling will get you some items on this person, but not all), the catalog item will *not* appear in your list. This explains all my headbanging of the last few days.

Has there been any thought about sorting the team page by player average, rather than total team score?

Re: emeloche
It shows the player average on the leader board, but it doesn't rank the teams that way. I agree; they should have a separate leader board based on player average.

Being able to see team rankings by average would be nice. (I'm really only saying this because then my team would go from #8 to #2, since there are only two people on it ;D )

Thanks for the suggestion, M, - I did get the sunglasses bit in the Hillary meme (check previous comment if anyone is similarly stuck). I'm still working on the Ryan one. I feel I know what it ought to be (and it's not) so I probably have a bad assumption somewhere.

I try not to use the staff pages since the hints there are often extremely obvious ones. Some of them seem like they're just one small step away from saying, "Type this gamecode in: " I enjoy the challenge of the puzzle and try to figure it out with minimal hints. Not always possible. But I'll go at least until the next badge drop before I look at staff pages. It's only Sunday.

And I try really hard to believe in "post and solve" since it often does work. As I think cherylo said, it gets you re-thinking all you've done to date and re-examining your previous assumptions.

Wow. I go away for like, 3 hours, and I am #7 on the leaderboard and there is 11 new comments.

Did you see the team leaderboard lately, and "The People who are on a team just to be on a team" team is winning, (probably because they have 24 players, but the PA is only about 20,000). (Just another reason to support ranks by averaging the points)

I don't read Manga, so the Mangler badge was tricky. I ended up guessing an alternative for one of the words, and googling it with the other word to see what I came up with. That worked pretty well.

I think it would be great if we could search for terms in our player ledger. I've been trying to add info to catalog entries and it would be useful if I could see whether I've already written a review for an item or only rated it (for example).

The quick and dirty method for that would be to use the find function of your browser. You would have to check each page, but that's better than skimming the pages yourself.

Thank you so much for adding the hints! It's really been a great help. I've also discovered the Treasure Quest badges & am doing those now alongside the Summer Game. I've been keeping busy! I'm stuck on the Belgian Key because I can't crack the code for the Belgian Gate...

Awesome job, AADL staff!

Re: ColeenT
Try to find an item in the catalog where the author of Coraline and the maker of The Voodoo Child collaborated. (Hint: I'm pretty sure the item is under the author of Coraline's name.)

Did I ever mention how much I hated duplicated comments? Now I have to edit this comment... Ugh...

I can't wait until the shop opens (go chocolate)!

Re: Bookbird
When you edit your comments, it gets posted as a "new" comment.

I am stumped on the first game code for How Beautifully Blue the Sky badge. I think the hint provided for this item is referring to the fact Frederick was supposed to be a ship pilot apprentice but that isn't helping me find any dvds (other than the Pirates of Penzance dvds that have the later codes). I've already found all the other game codes for this badge but can't seem to figure out the first one! Can anyone give me another clue?

Working furiously on the shop, hang in there guys... there will be 6 new items (although you probably already know what they are if you've looked closely around play.aadl.org ) but lots of mysteries.... but no chocolate yet! The Giga Chocolate Victory Package will return soon, but it's not an opening day item. Stay tuned!

-eli

Yay! I just checked the shop, and the upgraded version is so much easier to use!
I can't wait for the mystery items to come out. :)

Oh, and hooray for two pages of comments!

I know this is SOOOOO two weeks ago :) but I cannot find Charlie Brown's sister in the catalog...hints?! I've searched her full name & come up with nothing...maybe I'm looking too hard.

/random comment that is totally relevant because it refers to the first sentence of this post.

Did you know that the word "zounds" was originally pronounced something like "zoonds" (rhymes with wounds), rather than "zownds" (rhymes with sounds)? This is because it originated as "God's wounds", which shortened to "', which was then spelled how it sounds. I can only assume pronunciation changed as the origins of the phrase were forgotten because more words that end in -ounds are pronounced "ownds" than "oonds". (In fact, I can't think of any besides wound meaning injury.)

I always remember such random things from the books I read...

There are 2 badge pages. 1 of them is a list style page(ipad friendly) and 1 is the well known one with hints. Could there please be hints on the list page(you get to it by going to your scorecard and clicking to show all badges)?

This is off-topic but this seems to be the most likely place for a reply.....are the points-o-matic points worth regular Summer game points? I know that the Treasure points aren't, but what about points-o-matic? Thank you!

Re: alumeng.ajl
don't think so, also, you can just contact the staff on contact us, which is conveniently located just below the Summer Game Shop, on left hand side of the page.

You can always contact us, but the only things you can spend in the summer game shop are summer game points. Pointsomatic or treasure quest points can't be used for summer game shop purchases. Now, for the secret shop, that's another story... but that's still a few weeks away. =)

Thanks for all the replies guys. I had heard about the secret shop for the Treasure Quest but I wasn't sure which category points-o-matic would fall under. Again, Thank you!

can someone please explain how you're supposed to win these badges? ive just starting the summer reading program cause ive been busy and now i go on and have no clue how to win these.
i started with the manga mangler and i know the answers to all of the mistranslated titles, but now what? where do i get the codes and where do i put the codes when i find them?
plzplzplz help!

You search the title of the book in the CATALOG and click on them. You may have to look in every volume but if you find the right one, there should a GAME CODE on the left margin (you may have to scroll down a bit). Once you find it, you can either copy it, go to your player page, click I HAVE A GAME CODE and paste it there. Or you can click on the game code (it should be clickable and that will lead you straight to the Game code thing).

Zeineb E- Go to the catalog and find the items, then on the left side of the page, near the bottom, there will be a game code. Click it and you're good! It will most likely not be on the first result when you search, though.

(Haha, Smiles already posted.)

...I went to clague.

...Talent show...Chinese yo-yo... enough said.

...Figured it out?

I'm goin' to bed. Good night!

In reply to by Naverick22

I used to do Chinese yoyo when I was in middle school. Then I quit and spent all my Chinese school free time reading books. (Now all I can do is ma yi shang shu or whatever you call making the yoyo go up the string.)

Re: Rin

It's Ma Yi Shang Chu which means "Monkey goes up" where Ma Yi means monkey, Shang means up, and chu means to go. However, today we call it "monkey up the tree".

Currently, I'm a Yo-Yo teacher (actually, assistant) since september 2011 when I was 13 (Now I'm 14). I'm going to assist again at a camp called ACA in canton.

Naverick22- I do know Chinese. And ma yi shang shu is monkey up the tree. (It's also the name of a type of food, although I've never eaten it.)

And there are too many of you [someone else's personal information removed]. I can't keep straight which of you is which.

Re: imracon

Hints about what? If you need hints about any badge, you can ask me, or you can look at a staff's player page (or just look at the badge's page).

Can someone help me with the manga mangler? I just don't know what a telepathic person can also be.

Re: Rin

...Then disregard What I said before.

Re: Smiles

What do you call someone who can predict something correctly? and the other word starts with acad- (if you haven't figured it out already)

Re: Smiles
What is a person who is telepathic called? Phy.... and another word for school. (Aca....) Then when you find the two words, you search it on the catalog. (It's made in 2005)

Re: Smiles

1st word is the blanks

...Someone you can predict the outcome or the future is _________.

...Espeon is _________ type.

...Victini is fire and _________ type.

2nd word is the blanks.

...Khan __________.

...The __________ awards.

...Marine Military __________.

that is all.

Happy Fourth of July! I really wish I tried to sneak some minutes yesterday, sooooooooooo many comments. Going to the famous waterfall tomorrow. Personal request, everyone try not to add another hundred comments to here, or any other place (I don't know what these are called), by the time I get back. As much I like reading through comments, 100+ is not what I really like, as it reminds me of how (not so)often I manage to get on.

Bookbird- Get a smartphone and then go on whenever you feel like it! (Following the AADL summer game is definitely the best reason to get a smartphone...)

/is using her iPhone right now c:

I never knew there's going to be a shop for the point-o-matic. I've got 195130+ points to burn!

Re: mysterio
Think of a certain kind of book that helps a lot of students... In the catalog, they have yellow and black stripes on the covers. Hint: Cliff ____ (the second word is five letters long and starts with an "N").

Re: Morgsush

Pokemonfan12 is #3567, but he's a private page. If you want approval that he's the real deal, you're going to need to ask Eli or Andrew. If you don't think he's my brother, then we need either of the 2 guys to say whether the player number really is pokemonfan12. Because otherwise, how would I know the player number of his account?

...delete this copy. There was a temporary glitch on my laptop.

Thanks for the hint, Morgsush, but I still haven't figured it out.

mysterio- (It should be on the first page.) Looks like you already edited your comment c:

For the Weirding Way badge, search for the name of the book and "Cliffs" in the catalog. (It has to have the s, which threw me off for a bit.)

thnx

I LOVE the old newshound badges. It's fun to see all those old photos and stories.

I finally remembered Points-O-Matic once eli mentioned a store for Points-O-Matic points. Then I started playing it, and got 5 badges for it. That's how I got up to 400,000 points. It wasn't really that hard...

I saw you at KRC Bookbird! I don't think you noticed me though... You just walked by me and I waved to you. I think you talked to Shoto/Smiles, though.

Enjoy it. I would spend several hours per day on it if I didn't need to go to work and have other obligations, counting the reading, watching and listening as well as other activities related to the game. Actually, I think I average 1.5-2 hours per day anyway. :D. There is nothing wrong with enjoying activities like this as long as you don't neglect responsibilities to do it. Enjoy the ability to do something you like when you have the freedom to do it, I say.

Well I was going to the library a lot the past three days (because of KRC), but it's not what I usually do. I usually spend about 30 minutes to an hour on the Summer Game, actually.

@Tree64 - simply keeping up with the running conversation on these threads helps immensely with points since you get 50 pts for every post/reply you make. I don't know if that's what the rest of 'em are getting ALL their points from but it is a HUGE help. Some people have thousands and thousands of points just from posts/replies. :)

On a different note, I'm also loving having these hints available for the harder clues AND having the code count for each badge. That helps so much! Nice work Summer Game Staff!

I also really like the badge page and hints. It is really helpful to be able to see what codes you are missing from a badge.

Thanks Summer Game Staff

Re: Bookbird
I saw you at KRC, so I think I'll be able to recognize your face again.

Re: tree64
I also read, watch, and listen. Plus I go to events (I've been going to a lot of them recently) and I add to lists.

OK, Morgsush on both recongnition and events, good for you. Wish I could go to more events, but unless I finish my work, and get lucky, unlikely.

I think too little happens at Mallets Creek, a lot in downtown. If it has to be downtown, WHY couldn't it just be on Sunday? it seriously limits my attending events

Well, they're not very high on the leaderboard, if that's what you mean. They're below the 100's in ranking.

You guys all seem really interesting people. I wish I could meet you folks once. Too bad I can't come to player meeting this weekend.

You can't? Aww...:(
When ARE you free? Maybe we could have another player meeting, or I could just try to meet you in a library. You seem like a pretty interesting person too. :)
What's your closest branch?

In reply to by mysterio

I get annoyed sometimes when events are downtown. It's often so frustrating to try to drive to that branch, then I have to pay for parking while I'm there.

yay

In reply to by sophas

As far as I know, the only person I know who plays the summer game is my sister. She, however, knows all of you Clague 8th graders. (That definitely doesn't sound creepy. At all.)

In reply to by Morgsush

But it's hard, I have all the (catalog, not review and points-o-matic)badges from the newest badge to get, AND various badges from the other badge drops! How many bonuses are out there? I have the orange and the weird Al. What else?

I am glad that I came back and read this post (even though it was weeks ago). I am afraid that I have been skipping over the bonus codes because they are frequently harder. So now I know what I am missing out on.
Thanks

yay :)

In reply to by Morgsush

If you DO dominate the world, gxl, can I be the princess of the world?? You can queen but there will probably be no King (Richard is the only boy that could be a "royal" in your terms).

I dunno. Maybe the semi-prince can be Richard. Or would you rather have Richard be King? Or will you make your dream come true by making him my betrothed?

I'm feeling extremly awkward from this conversation... Let's switch to a new topic, okay?

Why am I a semi-princess?!? And why do I only get a semi-island?!? The Semi Princess goes on strike. Humph.

Zhengyang1022, if you do not want to be scarred for life, listen to my advice and don't read the comments. Just click the back button or quit this tab. YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE THIS CONVERSATION.

Ugh... Sure it is... Are you sure that's not your dream?

I doubt Richard plays Summer Game, so this warning will only be toward Zhengyang1022. GET OUT OF HERE BEFORE YOU ARE SCARRED FOR LIFE. You do NOT want to read this disturbing conversation about two maniacs planning to take over the world.

;)

@gxl--Who will be King?
@Morgsush--Hmm. Good question... Of course it's my dream--it's something I've dreamed of since I first met him... <strong>NOT<strong/>

So if I'm FIRST on the leaderboard and he's SECOND, we turn out to be semi's? But someone who's NINTH gets to be a princess?
I'm telling you, I'm going on strike. *pouts* :D

In reply to by Zhengyang1022

Bad?

In reply to by gxl

I warned you! Now you are scarred for life...

Plus, he's no second anymore, Twinkle is. So are you saying that Twinkle should be my semi-prince (even though s/he might be a girl)?

why don't we drop the topic. Also, while on learderboard

<strong>I'M SO MAD!!!!!!! I WAS #20 AND THEN SOMEONE NAMED JIM BUMPED ME TO 21ST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! </strong>
